Seems as though The Following's Claire Matthews (Natalie Zea) will survive the vicious knife attack that occurred in the season finale. The in-demand actress has inked a deal to return to the Fox thriller for Season 2. Confirming her eleventh hour contract renewal, Zea says the deal nearly didn't happen. "My concern, and [series creator] Kevin Williamson's concern, was always, is there more story to tell with Claire? And we both discovered that maybe there wasn't," Zea says.

As a result, the character was slated to be killed off. But according to sources, that decision did not sit well with Fox execs, who feared The Following would lose followers with its leading lady cut from the cast.

Hoping to maintain some of the cliffhanger's mystery, Zea won't say just how long her return will last — meaning it could be a dramatic death scene or the start of an exciting new story arc. Were it to be the latter scenario, Zea feels strongly that Claire would need to undergo a transformation from damsel in distress. "I feel like what would need to happen would be a change to her DNA," says Zea, who joins the cast of CBS's Under the Dome next month. "In other words, she might have to break bad a little bit. Although I don't know if anyone besides me would want that."

Despite the vicious knife attack against Claire Matthews in the season finale of the new FOX drama [b style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; list-style: none;"]The Following[/b], actress Natalie Zea, who plays Claire, will be back for the show’s second season, which is slated to air sometime in early 2014.
It would seem that despite the original plan by series creator Kevin Williamson to kill off Claire, executives at FOX were concerned that fans of the new thriller would turn away from the series if “its leading lady was cut from the cast”.
Fans shouldn’t get too excited, though, because neither the network nor Zea are saying how long or what kind of condition Claire will be in at the start of the sophomore season of ‘The Following’. In fact Zea has reportedly stated she would like to see Claire “undergo a transformation from damsel in distress”, but there is no word if the network will agree with that idea or not.
Zea, of course, is a much in demand actress appearing in the acclaimed FX series ‘Justified’ and HBO’s ‘Californication’. Among her other credits are the short-lived series ‘Dirty Sexy Money’, ‘Eyes’ and ‘The Defenders as well as roles in ‘The Shield’ and ‘Hung’ and guest appearances in episodes of ‘Royal Pains’ and ‘Person of Interest’.
The second season of ‘The Following’ will return to FOX at some point mid-season, namely early 2014.

Luke - New Villain for Season 2. Mid 20's.
Lily - Female, early 30's. A timeless beauty.
Melissa - Mid 30s, Survived an abusive relationship. Smart, Funny and attractive.
Max - Female, late 20's. Ryan's niece. NYC Cop and technical expert.

It also appears that Ryan survived.

McDaniel, who was nominated for two Emmy Awards for his role as Lt. Arthur Fancy on NYPD Blue, will play FBI Agent Ken Phillips, who heads the task force in New York City on the Fox drama. It's likely that his character will team up with Ryan Hardy ( Kevin Bacon ) as a replacement for Agent Deb Parker (Annie Parisse), who was killed in the Season 1 finale.

The FBI calls on Ryan and MIKE WESTON (Shawn Ashmore) to speak with the lone survivor, LILY (Connie Nielsen, “Boss,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”), in order to help them solve the case. Ryan is reluctant to re-engage with the FBI, but finds a valuable ally in his niece, MAX (Jessica Stroup, “90210”), an NYPD cop working in the Intel Division. The action began when notorious serial killer Joe Carroll escaped from death row. The FBI immediately called former agent Ryan Hardy to consult on the case, as he was the one responsible for Carroll’s capture in 2003, after Carroll murdered 14 female students on the Virginia college campus where he taught literature. Ryan, working closely with an FBI team, including Mike Weston and FBI Specialist DEBRA PARKER (Annie Parisse), uncovered that Carroll was covertly communicating with a network of followers while in prison. Challenged with the ever-growing web of murders orchestrated by the devious Carroll, the FBI quickly learned that they were up against not one, but a cult of killers.

As unimaginable events continued to unfold – including the kidnapping of Carroll’s son, JOEY MATTHEWS (newcomer Kyle Catlett), by followers EMMA HILL (Valorie Curry), JACOB WELLS (Nico Tortorella) and PAUL TORRES (Adan Canto); another prison escape by Carroll; and the plotted reunion of Carroll with ex-wife CLAIRE MATTHEWS (Natalie Zea) – the FBI’s investigations led them to uncover the depth of Carroll’s cult and the larger plan that Carroll had in store. The series’ initial season saw a number of casualties along the way, including Jacob’s emotional killing of Paul, the kidnapping of Agent Parker that ended in her death and Emma’s murder of Jacob.

Meanwhile, Ryan raced desperately to stop Carroll before his endgame reached its deadly conclusion. The explosive first season finale featured the highly anticipated face-off between Ryan and Carroll, ending in Carroll’s seemingly ultimate demise and leaving Ryan’s true love, Claire, hanging on for her life.
