Sherlock Season 3 Scoop: A Wedding and More Highlights From Comic-Con
Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman Sherlock Holmes will return from the dead next season to tackle his most formidable job yet — that of best man.
The news was revealed in a rough-cut clip for the first-ever Sherlock panel at Comic-Con in San Diego on Thursday. Although executive producer Sue Vertue implored fans to not reveal the particulars of the scene, it's no secret that Sherlock's (Benedict Cumberbatch) pal John Watson (Martin Freeman) will tie the knot. "Hot off the presses from 110 years ago... John does get married," co-creator Steven Moffat confirmed, referring to Watson's marriage in the original Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. "The secret was out before you were born."
Get all the Comic-Con news
The scene previewed is from Season 3's second episode, "The Sign of Three," which is written by Stephen Thompson and reveals a somewhat cheekier tone than before. "There's slightly more humor, it's slightly more real," Moffat said. "It's a very unusual episode, but I think it's everything you'd hoped it would be."
Naturally, a third season of Sherlock wouldn't work if its titular protagonist were dead, as Watson had presumed when he saw his partner commit suicide by leaping off the roof of a building in last season's dizzying finale. Just how Sherlock faked his death will be revealed in the premiere, "The Empty Hearse," written by co-creator Mark Gatiss. "It's a rational explanation," Moffat said. "When you see the answer, you'll see that yes, we did know in advance. We had to plot it out."
How Sherlock perpetrated the hoax, however, is secondary to the story of how Watson will react, two years later, to the news that his best friend is alive. "That moment is quite electrifying," Gatiss said. Moffat added, "It goes on and on. ... It's a long, complicated emotional journey and extremely funny."
Check out more scoop and highlights from the Comic-Con panel:
Personality swap! Apparently, Freeman, who usually plays the more casual Watson, is quite "sardonic" in real life, while Cumberbatch is the goofier of the two. "He's really quite puppyish and bumbling," Gatiss said. This was evidenced in a pre-taped video in which the Freeman sent a heartfelt message to the fans for missing the panel, and Cumberbatch took the opportunity to pretend to reveal how Sherlock lived, only to have the video and audio quality distort his rather lively explanation (involving stuffed monkeys and a helicopter!). Check out the video on EW.
Third time's the charm: Moffat infamously declared that three words — rat, wedding and bow (as in take a bow) — hinted at plots for each of the three episodes. Therefore, somehow Sherlock's return from the dead will also involve a rat ("Maybe in a biscuit tin," Gatiss said), and Episode 2's wedding is self-explanatory. The "bow" however, is less apparent, and Moffat, who wrote the third episode, told TVGuide.com that the episode's title will be revealed in a week, at the conclusion of the Season 2 reruns in the UK. We Yanks will have to stay tuned to the Internet to find out.
Powers of observation: The creators insist that how Sherlock faked his death can be inferred from watching the scene, and that no additional information is needed since there really are only a few ways one could survive jumping from a building.
CBS' Intelligence is not the new Chuck
Moriarty's back... sort of: Yes, Andrew Scott is back as the nemesis Moriarty, but don't get too excited. The character is really and truly dead. Scott was asked back because apparently, his fee is cheaper than using a mannequin. They're joking. We think. Moffat also shot down speculation that Moriarty, who shot himself in the head just before Sherlock jumped from the building, is still alive. "What if they fake-suicided each other? What a waste of a scene!" he scoffed.
Sherlock's women: Although Sherlock's great love Irene Adler (Lara Pulver) is currently out of the picture, Moffat concedes that our hero probably won't be getting a traditional love interest. "For Sherlock, sex happens up here," he said, pointing to his head. "But he'd probably poison his girlfriend just to see if it worked." As for forensic pathologist Molly Hooper (Louise Brealy), whom he turned to for help in last season's finale, Moffat said, "There is a very small number of people he trusts, that the likes. If you watch the scenes, she always wins. She makes him apologize, she humanizes him. Wait till you see what she does next time! [But] I don't think they'll end up dating. Two sociopaths in one relationship?"
Season 4: Although the series won't return until 2014, fans are already clamoring for the promise of more. Vertue confirmed that the actors are commissioned for a fourth season, if everything works out. No stories have been planned yet, but the creators revealed their favorite Doyle stories, which may or may not play out on screen later. Gatiss, who also plays Sherlock's brother Mycroft, admitted to liking "The Red-Headed League," partially because he's also a ginger. Moffat cited "The Speckled Band" for its storytelling, which he admits, "makes no sense at all."

Sherlock @ Comic-Con: Will Season 3 End With Another Brutal Cliffhanger? BY VLADA GELMAN Get More: Comic-Con, Scoop, Spoilers
Sherlock Comic-Con 2013 Season 3 SpoilersSherlock producers Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and Sue Vertue hit Comic-Con on Thursday to dish their titular character’s great (literal) fall at the end of Season 2, dissect the bromance between Sherlock and John and drop clues about what’s coming in Season 3. Read on to find out what they had to say: RELATED | Sherlock Renewed for Season 4
RESURRECTION ROAD | The procurers knew the Season 2 finale was going to rile up fans when they created it, thinking, “This is going to be ridiculous,” shared Moffat. “People are going to be so cross. That’s when it got really fun.” Added Gatiss, describing a live screening party: “Actually, approaching the last 20 minutes, it was incredible. As soon as it finished, everyone’s phones went crazy.” So how will the writers resolve Sherlock’s shocking plummet from the rooftop? “There really are only a few ways you can fall off a roof and survive,” replied Gatiss, while Moffat added that the “showstopper” of the Season 3 premiere is actually when John and Sherlock meet again. “That moment is electrifying,” he said. “And it goes on and on. That lengthy sequence is my favorite moment of Sherlock that we’ve made.”
HOBBIT BREAK | While stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman weren’t at the panel, they did send along a video message. The latter actor greeted fans in full Hobbit gear as he shoots The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, while Cumberbatch revealed that the stars will get back to work on Episode 3 of Season 3 this month — after “Martin puts his sweaty prosthetic feet back on.”
RELATED | Downton Abbey Season 4 Casts Paul Giamatti
RIP MORIARTY | Sorry, the bad guy is definitely dead, confirmed Vertue, although his portrayer Andrew Scott will return since it’s “cheaper to get him back than to get a mannequin,” said Moffat.
WEDDING BELLS | Episode 2 of the new season will feature the wedding of John to Mary, but the most touching moment during a special sneak peek belonged to John and Sherlock — as the former broaches the subject of a best man for the big day. Sherlock offers up several suggestions, until Watson snaps back, “But he’s not my best friend.” As the realization finally hits Sherlock, he goes absolutely still. “I’m…your…best friend,” he lets out slowly, to which John responds, “Of course you are.”
BROTHERLY BONDS | Gatiss couldn’t reveal how much his Mycroft will be around without spilling too much. He did, however, hint that unlike in the original stories, everything will not just be forgiven and that the producers “wanted to explore how [the disappearance] affected all of his friends and family.”
PREMIERE HOMAGE | The Season 3 premiere, titled “The Empty Hearse,” is “based on The Empty House, but only a little,” said Gatiss. It’s got a different plot. The enormously important thing is the impact Sherlock’s return has on John Watson.”
EVEN MORE SHERLOCK? | Talking about the stars’ Tweets that Season 4 is on the way, Moffat joked, “If [Cumberbatch] has commissioned another series, well done. He didn’t know he had comissioning power.” But in all seriousness, Vertue confirmed that the cast is “optioned for the fourth series. We just haven’t figured out when we can do it.” HANG ON TIGHT | Prepare yourself for another nailbiting ender. The upcoming Season 3 finale will have a cliffhanger, too. “You’ll be watching the end of the last episode thinking, ‘They wouldn’t stop it there?!’” teased Moffat. “‘They wouldn’t stop it there?! Oh my God, they wouldn’t stop it there?!’”
BIG SCREEN ADVENTURE | Asked if they’d ever do a Sherlock movie, Moffat replied, “It’s an interesting thought. They take ages to set up because are really slow compared to television. And we’d never want to do anything to reduce the quantity [of episodes] that we’re doing even further.”

Sherlock - Season 3 - New Image and BBC Message to fans to watch tonight's repeat closely Posted by DarkUFO at Friday, August 02, 2013 6 Comments Sherlock
Tonight, Sherlock fans have the chance to relive the series two cliffhanger episode The Reichenbach Fall and once again try to work out exactly how Benedict Cumberbatch's detective survived that plunge from the roof of St Bart's Hopsital.
But following the scenes many have analysed over and over again for clues, it looks as if there could be something new...
A cryptic message from a BBC insider landed on RadioTimes.com's desk this morning: "Our advice – keep watching to the very end!" Oh, and it was accompanied by this image...
So what could it all mean? (If you're not familiar with the original Sherlock Holmes stories and want to avoid mild spoilers, you might want to stop reading now)
Well the shot of a very familiar silhouette seen through a frosted glass door is one we haven't come across before. I think it's pretty safe to say it's from Sherlock series three and I'll go even further and suggest it's from the first episode The Empty Hearse.
But I don't think it's Sherlock on the other side of that door.
We already know that the story is based on Arthur Conan Doyle's original, The Adventure of the Empty House, in which Holmes is being hunted by the late Moriarty's right-hand man Colonel Sebastian Moran. Moran is a sharp shooter who has his sights trained on 221B Baker Street, potentially keeping the detective housebound.
The solution? A perfect wax bust of Mr Sherlock Holmes placed strategically at the window to create an unmistakable silhouette for Moran to fixate on – while Holmes's faithful landlady Mrs Hudson shuffles about on her knees, changing the cast's position from time to time so as not to give the game away, while the detective goes about his business in the outisde world...
Am I deducing too much from this single, simple clue? Perhaps. I'm no Sherlock, after all. But I am pretty sure we're going to catch a glimpse of series three (be it a still or a short piece of footage) following tonight's episode, so I'd echo the BBC's advice – keep watching tonight's Sherlock repeat to the very end. The game is afoot!
The Reichenbach Fall is tonight at 8:30pm on BBC1

Benedict Cumberbatch's message to paparazzi from 'Sherlock' set: 'Go photograph Egypt'
By Terri Schwartz August 17, 2013 11:12 PM ET Follow @Terri_Schwartz on TwitterTwitter | Google+Google benedict-cumberbatch-egypt-paparazzi-gi.jpgBenedict Cumberbatch has a very important message for the paparazzi hanging around the "Sherlock" set snapping photos of him and co-star Martin Freeman: Go somewhere where you'll actually be useful.
In an image published at Wales Online, Cumberbatch can be seen holding a sign over his face that reads, "Go photograph Egypt and show the world something important." It's a part of a gallery of photos taken of the set of "Sherlock" Season 3. While one might argue that the long-anticipated third season of "Sherlock" is important, it's certainly noble that Cumberbatch would rather focus on the larger global issues at hand. More than 800 people were killed during a week of violent clashes after Egypt's president, Muslim brotherhood leader Mohammed Morsi, was overthrown.

'Sherlock' Series 3 sneak peek shown in BBC drama trailer - Watch the video
The BBC has released a new trailer for their upcoming original drama schedule, giving sneak peeks at several shows, including the highly-anticipated Series 3 of "Sherlock." Missing from the video is any mention of "Doctor Who," though former star David Tennant and future Doctor Peter Capaldi are both present.
In one of the quick moments from "Sherlock," Benedict Cumberbatch's famous detective tells John Watson (Martin Freeman), "The thrill of the chase, the blood pumping through your veins. Just the two of us against the rest of the world." There's still no premiere date for "Sherlock."
Tennant can be seen as lawyer Will Burton in "The Escape Artist," while Capaldi is shown as Cardinal Richelieu in "The Musketeers," which will air in 2014. Other shows getting the spotlight include "The Great Train Robbery," "Quirke," "Ripper Street," "What Remains" and "By Any Means."
Fans will have to continue waiting for a glimpse of the "Doctor Who" 50th anniversary special, which will see former cast members Tennant and Billie Piper return.
