Coulson and his team have entered the second half of their first season, and with their story hurtling forward the series' creators have their eye on the endgame.

Executive Producers Jeph Loeb and Jeffrey Bell, two of the architects behind the ABC hit series "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." recently granted security clearance to Marvel.com to discuss the mechanics behind their development process, insight into fan reaction, and Mike Peterson's transformation into Deathlok.


"We knew [the last scene of the season] at the beginning," assures Bell of how keen the producers' vision of the series is. In their development process, Loeb and Bell retain specific "tent poles" of scenes and key moments they plan to utilize within the course of the season, but they also leave room to surprise themselves.

"[The development process] should be surprising for us as well," says Bell. "If you can see where it's going all the way in the pre-planning, it won't be [nearly] as exciting."

PaleyFest panelists hinted at Captain America crossovers with S.H.I.E.L.D., which will be back for seven episodes in a row starting April 8 culminating in the Season 1 finale, said exec producer Jeph Loeb. “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” has recruited yet another special guest star with fan-favorite actor/comedian Patton Oswalt, who will join the cast as Agent Eric Koenig in an upcoming episode of the hit series.

Koenig, who first appeared in SGT. FURY AND HIS HOWLING COMMANDOS #27, was a part of Fury’s original team of World War II soldiers in the comics. Oswalt, perhaps best known for his roles in “King of Queens,” “Ratatouille” and countless other films and TV series, came onto “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” in perhaps the most straightforward way possible—he was simply asked.

“I got a call from my agent saying they want you on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and I said ‘hell, yes,’” recounts the actor. “I’m lucky that I’m visible enough that they wanted to bring me in to play this character. I’d worked with [‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Executive Producer] Joss [Whedon] before on ‘Dollhouse,’ and I guess I wasn’t too annoying and they decided to put me on another one of his shows. So I was very lucky.”

Once he got the part, Oswalt instantly launched into some research—though perhaps not for the reason some might suspect. As a fan of the series, Oswalt has been asking the question many have posed, namely “Who is the Clairvoyant?”

“When they first told me the character’s name, I’ll admit the first thing I did is I went on Wikipedia and looked up the M.O.D.O.K. character to see if Koenig was maybe his name before he became M.O.D.O.K., but it wasn’t,” laughs Oswalt. “They keep on talking about the Clairvoyant in the show and I’m like, ‘is that M.O.D.O.K.? Am I M.O.D.O.K.?”

One thing the actor has always loved about the series even before his guest appearance was how it allowed the creators to explore the more overlooked corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, corners which are nonetheless very important to the big picture.

“[They’re] a scrappy bunch of agents who are sort of working on the lower tier levels of the Marvel Universe and trying to stop threats before they even get to the Avengers-level threats,” explains the actor. “It’s almost like when you watch ‘The Wire,’ and the guys like Pryzbylewski are just chasing the paper trail but that’s kind of the whole case. That’s where they can bring these guys down, is they’re doing the kind of brutal grunt work. There are these people doing the day to day that keeps the world from spinning into chaos. [They say,] ‘no, we don’t have the shiny Tony Stark, Hawkeye, Black Widow stuff, but we are in it up to our necks and we’re doing it. I really like that. There’s a great sense of camaraderie.”

As the series has progressed and introduced more elements from the Marvel comics such as Deathlok, John Garrett, Sif, Lorelei, or Eric Koenig himself, Oswalt feels the creators have remained incredibly faithful to their source material—and he couldn’t be happier to see one character in particular debut.

“They introduced Agent Garrett, who’s one of my favorite Marvel characters, and I kept asking them on the set, ‘is he going to be an android [like in the comics]?’” says Oswalt. “They’re just like, ‘you’ll have to wait and see.’ They clearly have plans. This is not the mid-‘90s anymore where they just handed comic book properties to anybody, they’re thinking I’m making a comic book [TV series] in this awesome universe and I don’t want to mess it up. And that’s a different motivation than what was happening in the ‘90s, and that’s real cool. I’m glad that changed, that they’re giving them to guys that welcome the tension of, ‘how do I make popular entertainment that still acknowledges this big fanbase that cares about this universe? And if I’m going to change things, can I do it in a way that makes them go oh wow?’”

Oswalt also feels the tone of the series has begun to shift.

“They’re using the Jonathan Hickman model of wheels-within-wheels,” explains Oswalt. “It’s getting into that John Le Carre, ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’ world now, which creates even more tension because you don’t know, is someone lying to me, and are they doing me a favor by lying to me? That’s really great stuff to play as an actor.”

When Oswalt walked onto the soundstages for “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” one thing in particular impressed him instantly.

“For a TV show, the practical sets that they built are more elaborate and more of a 360 sandbox environment than a lot of movie sets that I’ve been on, and that really blew me away,” recalls the actor. “You could do almost West Wing walk and talk sequences on set. I was like, this is the set for a very brief arc of the show, and the level of detail that went into it was pretty stunning.”

Finally, as a fan of not only the series but all things Marvel, Oswalt’s experience on the show did have one slightly bittersweet component to it.

“When you’re in something, now you know what’s coming. A big part of me is still a big consumer of this stuff. I have friends now that write some of the comics, and they’ll send me issues, [but] I like having to wait until every Wednesday and get it once a month. That’s sort of part of the story for me. It’s that push-pull of, I want to know stuff now, but I also like the waiting is part of the fun. [Marvel’s] doing so much stuff [though], and now with the Netflix [deal], there’s always going to be enough to wait for and rub my hands together for. That will never be a problem.”

Whedonverse alum Amy Acker has landed a pivotal role on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

Acker will appear in at least one episode of the ABC series as Audrey, the famous cellist first mentioned in Marvel's The Avengers as being the love of Phil Coulson's (Clark Gregg) life. A talented musician turning heads in Portland, Audrey believes Coulson to be dead and has no idea that he's guarding her from a distance as a super-powered threat from her past re-emerges.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: What is the blue alien? One theory debunked!

The cellist, who had remained nameless until now, was mentioned earlier this season when Raina (Ruth Negga) goaded Coulson by saying his former long-distance lover had cried for days after his death.

Acker's casting marks a reunion between the actress and Gregg, who shared the screen in S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing adaptation. Currently starring on Person of Interest, Acker is also well known for her roles on Whedon's Angel and Dollhouse, where she worked with S.H.I.E.L.D. bosses Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Her credits also include Once Upon a Time, The Good Wife and Alias.

Agents of SHIELD - First Look at Patrick Brennan as The Blackout + Interview

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is about to experience a Blackout.

Patrick Brennan (“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” “The Black Donnellys”) will make his debut as Marcus Daniels, a.k.a. Blackout in the original Marvel comics, in the series’ upcoming eighteenth episode, “Providence,” before playing a larger role in the following episode.

First appearing in NOVA (1976) #19, “Providence” will mark Daniels’ live-action debut, but with his powers slightly different than in the comics: This version of Daniels will have the ability to suck the energy out of anything around him.

We spoke with Brennan about his villainous turn, so read on to find out more about the villain’s upcoming appearance.


Marvel.com: How did your role as Marcus Daneils sort of come together?
Patrick Brennan: I had been in for “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” several times for other things, for other parts, and I know that they liked me so this came along and they actually offered it to me. I didn’t have to go in and read for it, which was a first for me. I didn’t know anything about the part, they kind of gave me the gist of it and then I had an in-depth conversation with a couple of the [producers] on the phone. And the whole time, I’m like, “You guys are putting me on, right? This is ridiculous. It’s so cool.”

It’s just rare to have a character that’s [this] interesting. There’s just something to it. I’ve been working pretty steady here for the last three or four years, and then this bit came along and it was so empathetically explained to me. Not to sound all actor-y on you, but I identified with the character. I don’t know how you feel, [with knowing] the character and all, but I identified with the character very much. I got to play a villain with a heart and superpowers. It was just a thrill.

Marvel.com: When you had that conversation with the producers, what was their pitch to you?
Patrick Brennan: This is the way they explained it to me: This guy, Marcus Daniels, a.k.a. Blackout, was shrouded in darkness, his soul, everything about him was shrouded in darkness until he comes across this Cello player. And the music was the only light that came into his soul, and it gave him hope and it gave him some sense of what light was. I thought to myself, oh my god, you don’t even need to explain anything else. Because music, to me, is what gets me through most of the time. My kids, my wife, and music. That aspect of it totally intrigued me. I thought that was quite beautiful and very interesting, that aspect of the character.

S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson is about to have a very bad day.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier, released in theaters over the weekend, reveals that the secret government agency has been infiltrated to its core by sleeper agents of Hydra, an evil organization bent on world domination.

And in a bit of movie-to-TV synergy, the film's events will prompt a major retooling of ABC's Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for its first season's final six new episodes, beginning Tuesday (8 ET/PT).

"It's an extremely unique experience that doesn't exist anywhere else out there in the entertainment business," says Jeph Loeb, executive producer and head of Marvel TV.

The show's group of agents led by Coulson (Clark Gregg), introduced in the Marvel movies, are faced with not only trust issues among themselves but a civil war within the entire S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, where no one knows who's actually a Hydra operative.

Upcoming episodes feature at least one major betrayal, and what's left of Coulson's team is forced to deal on their own with the dismantling of their whole world as well as the new Hydra threat.

"Survival is a huge part of it," says executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen. "There is no more tapping into big S.H.I.E.L.D. through the holo-comm. The guns you have on the plane are the guns you have. They're basically left with the bare minimum."

Coulson's team — agents May (Ming-Na Wen), Ward (Brett Dalton), Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and Skye (Chloe Bennet) — were established as new characters in Marvel lore finding their identity in "the most massive organization ever created by man," adds executive producer Jed Whedon. "Now they really are a ragtag bunch scraping things together."

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has had bigger problems than Hydra its first season. Viewership has been disappointing — it premiered in September with an impressive 12 million viewers, but ranked behind The Voice and NCIS with 5.71 million last week, though it is expected to return next fall.

And the hardcore fanboy contingent has decried its lack of characters from the comics, though that will be addressed with the Hydra element, which the show couldn't mention until now in order to avoid spoiling Winter Soldier, Whedon says. Instead, the series spent time building external threats -- the big bad mystery man the Clairvoyant, the mad scientists of Centipede, the cyborg operative Deathlok (J. August Richards) -- for the heroes to deal with that would then connect back to Hydra later.

"Hopefully people who've had mixed feelings about the show will now understand it was all part of a big plan," Tancharoen says.
