Following the departure of Jennifer Love Hewiit (Kate Callahan), and with AJ Cook (JJ Jareau) going on maternity leave, Criminal Minds has added Aisha Tyler to the cast in a recurring role for season eleven. Tyler previously appeared in 13 episodes of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation’s fifth season, where she played DNA lab tech Mia Dickerson. On Minds, she’ll portray a forensic psychologist named Dr Tara Lewis.

Tyler spoke about the role on The Talk yesterday, and you can watch the video below:

According to Entertainment Weekly, Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) interviews several candidates to replace Kate on the team. Dr Lewis stands out, and she helps the team during an investigation. Here’s a description of the character’s background:

Her dream was to study psychopaths up close and personal – and her psychology background, combined with her experience in the FBI, brought her face-to-face with monsters. Her job was to stare them down and interview them, in order to determine if they were fit to stand trial. In the process, she made herself find the humanity inside these broken men (and, sometimes, women) in order to learn if there was a conscience behind their brutal crimes.

There’s more team shake-ups coming to the BAU on “Criminal Minds” Season 11. Matthew Gray Gubler reveals that there’s another team member planning to take some time off from catching bad guys — and Gubler will be the one directing the exit episode.

“I am [directing]. There’s a special episode,” he says. “I almost don’t want to give it away, but I might as well. It’s the departure of one of the regular team members.”

Kate Callahan (Jennifer Love Hewitt) already put in for a leave of absence in the Season 10 finale, but Reid (Gubler) also discovers that J.J. (A.J. Cook) is expecting a child of her own. Will she be leaving the BAU to also focus on her family?

Gubler isn’t willing to say, but with Season 11 episode 4 already in production, he’s excited for fans to see what is up their sleeves.

“Reid is back at it, catching scumbags and hanging with the team that he loves and helping solve crimes,” he says “We’ve got some new cast additions. Aisha Tyler is on the show. It’s been great so far. We’re definitely off to a good start. We’re running fast.”

What hasn’t been moving fast is Reid’s more personable social skills — which Gubler hopes will change this season.

“That’s the great thing about playing a character for so long is that there’s always new territory. Trying to take him a little bit more — I’ve always wanted him to show growth,” Gubler explains. “I want to see him slowly become less socially awkward and more confident.”

He’ll have a big moment in the season premiere. “He gets to do a take down Reid style, which is just using his brain with a physical thing that’s really disturbing — you have to turn away,” executive producer Erica Messer says. “It’s not a standoff with a gun, it’s a Reid version of a takedown.”

Showrunner Erica Messer believes the show's audience of 11 years is ready for a "much more serialized" season, so this year's kicks off with an investigation into "The Dirty Dozen," a network of hit men that will be "a heavy thing" for Hotch et al to investigate, and a story "that really won't culminate until the end of the season." ("It's a crazy arc," says cast member Matthew Gray Gubler. "It's exciting, spooky, team members might be in peril…. Fun stuff as always!") Speaking of the team, Kate is of course gone and JJ (like portrayer A.J. Cook) is still on maternity leave, so Aisha Tyler will temporarily step in for the latter. "Aisha is such a smart person that playing a really smart character (psychologist Dr. Tara Lewis) is obviously second nature to her," says Messer. Notes Gubler: "Comedians make the best dramatic actors, and that's true for Aisha especially."

BONUS SPOILER!: Amber Stevens will return as Rossi's daughter Joy in Episode 7, "so that will be a fun thread to pick up," says Messer. "We would love to have her on a couple times a year."

Though Reid resurfaced last week, he was MIA for a stretch, because Matthew Gray Gubler’s current deal doesn’t call for him to be in every Season 11 episode. As Erica Messer explains, “I always joke that [Matthew] makes me feel like I’m standing still, he has so many things going on all the time. There was an opportunity he didn’t want to pass up for the fall that made him light with us, and we were happy to oblige because he’s such a pro and such a love. We love to make him happy.”

Derek's life just got way more exciting.

Danny Glover, acclaimed star of both the stage and screen, will join SSA Derek Morgan's family this season on Criminal Minds.

In a highly-anticipated episode, aptly titled "Derek," Glover will guest-star as Shemar Moore's character's father. Showrunner Erica Messer TVline.com that "the reason Derek needs to call on his protector in this moment and work through some things is really beautifully written."

This special episode, written by Breen Frazier and directed by cast member Thomas Gibson, is the sixteenth episode of the hit show's 11th season.

Recently, CBS revealed the new,official synopsis/spoilers for their upcoming “Criminal Minds” episode 15 of season 11, and it sounds very interesting as the BAU’s latest investigation has them hunting down an UnSub that is actually being invited into the homes of his victims, and more! The episode is called, “A Badge and a Gun.”

Press release number 2: The BAU is going to end up searching Los Angeles after the team discovers security footage that shows an UnSub being invited into victims’ homes. Marisol Nichols returns as Agent Natalie Colfax. Carmine Giovinazzo (“CSI: NY”) guest stars as Andrew Meeks, a former janitor.

The matter of filling the void left by Moore’s exit was of courses addressed here. As for Aisha Tyler continuing on as Dr. Lewis if there is a Season 12, “That is my hope,” show boss Erica Messer told me. “I love her.”
