MARKOS ARRIVES IN MYSTIC FALLS — In order to keep Stefan (Paul Wesley) from being harmed by Sloan (guest star Caitlin McHugh) and the Travelers, Caroline (Candice Accola) and Enzo (guest star Michael Malarkey) agree to make a trip to Atlanta to find a newly discovered doppleganger. Caroline is surprised when Enzo opens up to her about his past. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) spend an awkward afternoon at Jeremy’s (Steven R. McQueen) parent-teacher conference, where they hear bad news about his behavior at school. Afterwards, Damon reluctantly tells Elena upsetting news about Jeremy's personal life. Bonnie (Kat Graham) has an unsettling encounter with Luke (guest star Chris Brochu), and learns more about his family history. Liv (guest star Penelope Mitchell) fills Jeremy in on the rumors about the Travelers’ next move and demonstrates her considerable power. Katherine Pierce has gone to Hell — or at least The Vampire Diaries' version of the dark side — and she's not coming back.

In the final moments of Thursday's episode, Katherine (Nina Dobrev) made her peace with losing her centuries-long battle to stay alive, but as she put her hands on Bonnie's shoulders, the gateway to the other side, nothing happened. Suddenly, the wind started blowing, and Katherine was sucked into oblivion.

"It's unlike anything we've seen before," executive producer Caroline Dries tells TVGuide.com. "We've seen characters appear to Bonnie [Kat Graham], the anchor, and go through Bonnie and that's their initiation into the other side. When Katherine died, that didn't happen and [instead] she's ripped out of Bonnie's arms and sucked into wherever by some dark void. We don't say anything religious like Heaven or Hell, but that's the implication — she's going to a dark world."

As the series has shown countless times, a character can die and come back to life, but Dries says this isn't their way of keeping Katherine around and they don't intend on delving into this darker world.

"I don't think we'll explore it so much as in the future, we'll use something similar happening like that on the other side where it becomes a bit of disarray over there and people get sucked into oblivion," Dries says. "What we wanted when we were writing the Katherine story line this season was to really deliver on her as a character. This show is known for bringing people back to the dead, so death didn't ever feel final; they could hop over from the other side if we feel desperate. So we wanted to say, 'No, she's gone.'"

Katherine being the master manipulator, she of course didn't exit without leaving a very deadly parting gift. Poor Elena might be returning to her body, but she's now been injected with the vampire-eating virus that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has been suffering with. Together the two will have a mighty battle to face in the final chapter of Season 5.

"It's now, how do we get out of this?" Dries says. "Elena is dealing with the turmoil and emotional damage left in Katherine's wake, but Elena is also dying. This virus is killing her. Two of our main characters have this incurable virus and they want to kill everyone, so what do they do? Our guys will have to make a deal with the devil to save their friends."

While Katherine certainly had her flaws, many fans — us included — loved watching her character be so ensconced in the story lines lately. So why did the writers ultimately decide to let one of the best parts of this season go? It was a necessary evil. "Last season there was the tentpole episode where Jeremy [Steven McQueen] died and then we had Elena before Jeremy and Elena after Jeremy. It helped with the plot so much in terms of emotional character movement," Dries says. "So we knew we needed to have a big splash [this season], but also Katherine has been so instrumental to all the story lines this season and at some point it has to end — but it has to matter. So that's what we did and then we threw a twist in there to shock people a little bit."

The Vampire Diaries - Episode 5.16 - While You Were Sleeping - Press Release
Posted by DarkUFO at Friday, March 07, 2014 1 Comment

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES
“While You Were Sleeping” — (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (Content Rating TBD) (HDTV)

A KILLER VIRUS — When Stefan (Paul Wesley) tries to explain recent events to a very sick Elena (Nina Dobrev), her first instinct is to call Damon (Ian Somerhalder). At the same time, Damon is trying to figure out how to make a disturbing confession to Elena. While going through Dr. Wes’ files, Caroline (Candice Accola) discovers a frightening secret, and is surprised when Enzo (guest star Michael Malarkey) appears, claiming to have the solution everyone is searching for. At Enzo’s insistence, Caroline asks Stefan to meet her at a mysterious location where they are joined by a group of Travelers, including Sloan (guest star Caitlin McHugh), who reveals new information on the importance of doppelgangers. During spring break on a mostly deserted Whitmore campus, Elena runs into Luke (guest star Chris Brochu), a student who seems to know her, though she has no memory of meeting him. Recently dumped by his boyfriend, Luke proposes that he and Elena spend the break getting drunk together, but she sends him off on an urgent mission to find Bonnie (Kat Graham) and the “newbie” witch, Liv (guest star Penelope Mitchell). Damon finally tells Elena the truth about his recent activities, and they come to a new agreement about their relationship. Pascal Verschooris directed the episode written by Caroline Dries (#516).

Elena is back on The Vampire Diaries! Any scoop for what's next? — Jennifer
If you thought Katherine being sucked into hell was bad, just wait until you see what Elena is about to go through. Not only does she have the vampire-eating virus, but her hallucinations will also cause her to go a bit nutso. The light at the end of the tunnel? The kiss at the end of this preview is only the start of one crazy-hot hookup. Let's just hope they don't eat each other in the process!

Question: Any Vampire Diaries scoop? –Chery

Ausiello: I’ve got some good scoop, Chery — especially if you’re a card-carrying member of Team Delena. Damon’s ex-girlfriend may be infected and hungry for vampire blood, but that doesn’t mean she’s lost her libido. Ian Somerhalder tells TVLine there’s going to be some major action between Damon and Elena this Thursday, or in his words: “There’s some sexy time happening. Exes, man. What are you going to do?”

Is there any chance Damon and Elena could be cured on The Vampire Diaries? — Karyn

A cure is a safe bet, but it won't come right away — which is bad news for anyone of the vamps in Damon's path. "He's just going to try to eat everyone," Ian Somerhalder tells me. Once Damon has wreaked havoc, however, someone else (read: a witch) will most likely save the day.

» Puis Ian Somerhalder a répliqué « On a Caroline ! Caroline reste avec nous ! »

What can we expect for Caroline on The Vampire Diaries' next few episodes?! — 4evaKlaroline, via Twitter
Well, 4evaKlaroline, I have it on good authority that Caroline and Stefan will be cuddling up soon. "We just [filmed something] that was pretty intimate," Paul Wesley tells me. "It wasn't sexual, but borderline-platonic, where we're giving each other looks and it really drives me crazy." We already know how Candice Accola feels about the possible pairing, but is Wesley on board? "I think that would be wonderful," he says.

Shane: Enzo and Caroline? Yes please! They are so hooking up on The Vampire Diaries, right?
Pump the brakes there, girl! Sparks? Yes. Hooking up? Probably not. Julie Plec dishes, "I think it's fairly safe to say now after five years that Caroline has chemistry with everybody and so there's definitely some fun banter and some flirtation that she indulges on a small level because Enzo is a highly mischievous flirt, but I think it's really more just he gets a kick out of digging at her and poking at her. That' just the kind of guy he is. He likes to rile people up and she's very easily riled."

Question: I know it’s a little early to ask this, but anything you can give us on next season of The Vampire Diaries? — KS
Ausiello: Well, KS, before you ask what’s coming up in Season 6, you should probably ask which characters might not live long enough to see it. ”There are going to be a lot of goodbyes as we realize the other side is disintegrating,” executive producer Julie Plec tells TVLine. “Not everybody is going to survive that. We’re going to have to say goodbye to some characters that we’ve grown to love over the years. That’s what we’ll see when we get to the finale.”

Question: Any Vampire Diaries scoop? Especially something about Caroline? — Chery
Ausiello: If by “Caroline,” you mean “Stefan and Caroline,” I’ve got you covered, Chery. The fan-favorite characters are about to spend a lot more time together, including one particularly steamy scene that Plec was happy to tease for us: “They go on an adventure, there’s a train car and it’s cold outside. So what are a girl and a boy to do, but cuddle up for warmth?” What, indeed.

Damon Salvatore is grabbing his bomber jacket and heading back to the 1960s.

In the April 24 episode "Man of Fire," The Vampire Diaries will flash back to the decade right after Damon (Ian Somerhalder) escaped from the Augustine cell. Could this scene also include Maggie, played by Heather Hemmens, who makes her debut appearance in that episode? As Enzo (Michael Malarkey) explained in "The Cell," Maggie was Enzo's only companion while he was locked up and she was "the one who got away."

5 mini Vampire Diaries teases

Asked about the important flashback, executive producer Caroline Dries told TVGuide.com: "We get to see Stefan and Damon for one night, but we [also] dig into Enzo's story line too. He becomes the mini 'bad' of the season and we're figuring out his motivation for why he's in town. He's going to make a number of enemies and he won't do himself favors."

'The Vampire Diaries' showrunners reveal Enzo's 'evil agenda,' tease his road trip with Caroline plus Jeremy's big decision

There's so much to look forward to in this Thursday's (March 27) episode of "The Vampire Diaries." Caroline and Enzo's road trip. Damon and Elena's friends with benefits experiment. Shady siblings Luke and Liv make their move. A new Stefan doppelganger. And Jeremy makes a decision that changes everything and leaves Elena devastated. What the what?

With so much up in the air going into "Rescue Me," Zap2it went straight to the "TVD" bosses Julie Plec and Caroline Dries to get all the scoop we could on what to expect from the intense and fun episode. The biggest thing on our minds? Enzo, Enzo, Enzo.

"Enzo of course is full of mischief as they go off on this journey together," executive producer Plec tells Zap2it. "He delights in the fact that he's heard that Caroline has a special soft side for Englishmen with accents. He's constantly poking at her and being very playful with her and she wants nothing to do with that. But they have fun banter that's really enjoyable. That's why it's so fun to watch them together, but we are by no means trying to create 'Cenzo' right off the bat."

Executive producer Dries agrees that while Caroline and Enzo don't have a romantic dynamic, it's heated nonetheless. "She's so quick and he can't be bothered, so they have a fun dynamic," Dries tells Zap2it. "He's got his own drive that we'll figure out doesn't really involve her but it actually highlights a softer side to him."

But don't start rooting for Enzo to get what he wants, because spoiler alert: He's not one of the good guys. "He becomes the bad guy coming up," Dries reveals. "So he's not going to be some guy that she wants to take on a date by any means. Enzo's going to reveal his evil agenda."

And as for Caroline's promise to the Travelers that she'll kill Stefan's doppelganger in cold blood, Dries and Plec weren't spilling on whether or not our favorite blonde vampire can actually go through with it. "There is an interesting dilemma that comes out of it," Dries teases. "In the writer's room, we're always looking for conflict and for things to feel new, and I don't think this is an everyday kind of conflict. She's going to deal with it and learn a little bit about herself in the meantime."

Back in Mystic Falls, Jeremy's going to run into a problem on his own, and will make a decision that will leave Elena "devastated." What on earth is little Gilbert getting mixed up with?

"Jeremy was the kid that was needed to be taken care of at the beginning of the season. Damon was like, 'I'll take care of him while you go to college,'" Dries says. "But Jeremy is like, 'I'm a hunter, I'm a man, I'm the one person here with a job besides Matt,' so he's actually grown into a man. He's making decisions by himself. So as Elena is flailing about what she wants and what's right and wrong, Jeremy's like, 'I'm putting my foot down. I don't need protection. I can take care of myself.' He's slowly but surely becoming this man, and Elena has to deal with that."

What do you think Enzo is setting out to do? Does Caroline have it in her to kill Stefan's doppelganger? What kind of decision is Jeremy going to make? Find out when "The Vampire Diaries" airs Thursday (March 27) at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

'The Vampire Diaries': Candice Accola promises a 'strong' Caroline leading up to the finale, teases what's coming next

Caroline's going on a road trip for her first college spring break on "The Vampire Diaries," but she's not heading to some boozy beach town with plans to party all night and sleep all day. Nope, she's heading to Atlanta with none other than Enzo to track down Stefan's doppelganger and kill him, ensuring that the Travelers don't kill her BFF. That's a lot of pressure for someone who just wants to make it through her first year of college unscathed ... and maybe get some good grades along the way.

Zap2it got Candice Accola on the line to talk all things Caroline, including what to expect from her road trip with Enzo, whether she can really kill a Stefan doppelganger in cold blood, whether or not she 'ships Caroline with Stefan, and much more. Plus, Accola promises we'll get to see a "strong" Caroline leading up to the big events of the season finale, and we all know a strong Caroline is the best Caroline. Check out Zap2it's full Q&A with Accola below.

Zap2it: First off, I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I am to see Caroline and Enzo's road trip this Thursday (March 27).
Candice Accola:
Oh yay! Yeah, it's really fun. We actually get to see them go on a road trip, we don't just hear about it. We go on this road trip and we learn more about Enzo and why this doppelganger is so important to the Travelers.

All that time cooped up together on the road, that's definitely going to affect Caroline and Enzo's shaky alliance, right? How might their dynamic change?
I think that it's going to give Caroline a deeper understanding and a better understanding of who Enzo is, along with the audience. There's definitely going to be very heated banter. Not heated like in a romantic way, though. More heated in just a challenging way. It's challenging banter. I think it's also reflective of Caroline's disdain for Damon. Considering that Enzo is Damon's sidekick and buddy, I don't think Caroline trusts Enzo too much at this point. She's going to keep her guard up while she continues to understand and figure out who this person is and what he's doing in Mystic Falls.

I have to say, I was extremely shocked at how nonchalant Caroline was telling Stefan about how she agreed to kill his doppelganger in cold blood. Not only is he some innocent (I'm assuming), unsuspecting guy, he also looks identical to her BFF! Can she really go through with it?
I think what's going through Caroline's mind is that of course she can do this. She's willing to do anything and everything to save and protect the people that she loves. And Stefan has become one of her friends who she cares about, and she'll risk everything to keep him safe. I don't think she's really put it into perspective of who this doppelganger is, what his story is, however. Her attention is really focused on Stefan, whereas Stefan is more in the perspective of what the audience's perspective is, like, "Okay Caroline. You've never really killed someone just because you needed to, so why would you start now?" It will be interesting to see in this week's episode how Caroline handles meeting Stefan's doppelganger.

So just to be clear, we will be meeting the doppelganger in this episode, "Rescue Me," right?
Well, we are on a journey to find him.

Hmm, okay, cryptic. So can you tease or reveal when ... or, I guess, if we'll meet the doppelganger?
No. [laughs] Just to be safe, no. Sorry!

Fair enough! Changing gears a little bit, I hear there might be a major, juicy "Steroline" moment in the episode. Do you want to see something romantic happen between these two BFFs?
There's been speculation from fans from all the way back in Season 2 when Stefan took Caroline under his wing after she turned into a vampire. I think it's really interesting that viewers and fans have had theories to back this relationship even though Stefan and Elena were so madly in love and now they're all comfortable pairing Stefan and Caroline together, because that would be the ultimate betrayal of a friendship and an ex. Personally, I really love what this friendship has become and what we're going to see from this week's episode is a really raw moment between them in their friendship. It will give us all a glimpse at really how close they've become. What's in store for them in the future, that's all in the writers' hands. I just think it's so interesting that a lot of people have been supporting the progression of that friendship turning into something romantic.

It's been said before and I'll say it again now, that's because you just have chemistry with every male co-star you share a scene with. Do you ever get tired of Caroline constantly being "shipped" with every other guy on the show?
[laughs] I'm completely flattered to be the driving force behind a character that gets "shipped" as they say with all these other characters. As a fan of television myself, I love when I get super into the romantic tension between two characters. It's fun! It's fun to cheer them on. And to be on the other side of that, as the character, it's really cool. That means that at least they're enjoying what's happening on screen and they see possibilities for where these different characters can go. It's funny how much it happens with Caroline but I'm really happy to be a part of a character who that happens to.

Yeah, and people are already shipping Caroline with Stefan's new doppelganger, if you can believe that. What do you think about that fan theory that a relationship between Caroline and the doppelganger would be a "safe" way of paying off the Steroline chemistry without ruining their friendship?
I think that's a really creepy theory [laughs]. That's very creepy. All those fans will just have to wait until they see this week's episode to see if that happens or not.

You said earlier that Caroline's going to get to know Enzo better this week on their trip, and his progression this season has been really interesting. He started off as a loose canon, then kind of saved the day with the ripper virus antidote, but I'm hearing that he will become a big bad by the end of this season. What can you tease about how his motivations might change or how he becomes a villain?
What I love about what the writer's have established within the series is that there is an immediate suspicion to anyone that joins the show. I think that's so fun and it's a part of what makes this series so nail-biting. So I say run wild with your suspicions and keep watching to see if they're true or not.

Well put! Okay, now looking ahead to the season finale -- and I honestly can't believe we're talking about the finale already. I feel like we just started this season.
I know!

[Creator] Julie Plec has revealed that everyone will realize that The Other Side is "disintegrating." What can you tell me about how that might affect all of our favorite characters?
I can tease that all of the characters are going to band together leading up to the finale. As opposed to the past when you'd see different groups separate and try to accomplish their own end result, we're really going to unify these characters and they're going to come together to accomplish what they set out to do. Leading up to the finale over the next couple of episodes, it's going to be really important to learn the mythology not just of the Travelers but also The Other Side and whether that is as strong as we always thought it would be or need it to be, or if it's much more frail than we ever expected it to be.

Interesting. So what are you most excited for fans to see from Caroline as we gear up for the finale?
What I'm excited for fans to see leading up to the series finale for Caroline is how strong she's become in her own convictions to protect the people that she loves. It's kind of been a running theme for her over the season but there's a more rooted strength this time around, and that's been really fun to play.

And looking ahead to next season, what do you want to see from Caroline in Season 6 of "The Vampire Diaries?"
As far as next season goes, I have no idea. After nine months of working, I can't even fathom what the writers have in store for us next year.

"The Vampire Diaries" airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

'The Vampire Diaries': Candice Accola on Steroline's 'raw' moment, Markos' arrival, and her road trip with Enzo

In last week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, we were introduced to the secret hangout of the Travelers, where we discovered that there was yet another Stefan doppelganger lurking somewhere as an EMT. And with Caroline and Enzo off to hunt him down, could there be a love connection there? And what about this mysterious leader of the Travelers named Markos? What could his arrival mean for the residents of Mystic Falls?

We caught up with Candice Accola to get some information about just how bad Markos is, and what she thinks about Steroline, Klaroline, and more:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: We ended last week with Carolne and Enzo going off to find yet another Stefan doppelganger, and my biggest fear was that the next episode would pick up with them already back, but it sounds like we’re going to see this trip and maybe learn a little more about this doppelganger?
CANDICE ACCOLA:
Yes, we are going on a road trip with Caroline and Enzo, and they’re on the hunt for Stefan’s doppelganger, and so we’re going to go along with them, and we’re going to meet this doppelganger and we’re going to learn a little bit more about why he is so valuable to the Travelers.

And that leads me to my next concern: Caroline was talking last week like she’s going to be able to go off and kill this guy, but it would be difficult to kill someone who looks exactly like your best friend.
Yes, and I think Caroline has told herself, “No I can do this, I can do this,” and Stefan’s a little bit more clear-headed. At the end of the episode we saw him saying, “I’m not sure you quite understand what you’re saying right now; I’m not sure you can actually handle it.” But Caroline’s off on this road trip to do what she can for Stefan, and Stefan is her main priority, and their relationship and their friendship has grown so much at this point, so it’s her kind of act of valor to really support Stefan, save Stefan and make sure that he is safe. And whatever she has to do in order to keep him safe, she’s willing to do.

I’ve read two different accounts of Stefan and Caroline sharing a moment of friendship in this episode and then potentially it being a little cold outside and maybe cuddling a bit, so what can you tell me about what’s in store for the two of them this week?
I can say when we really filmed the scenes it was very cold, incredibly cold. [Laughs] We saw some really great moments between Caroline and Stefan as friends in last week’s episode, and that’s going to continue into this week’s. Primarily, we’re going to be focused on Caroline and Enzo’s road trip, but we’re also going to see a really nice opportunity, a really raw moment of friendship between Caroline and Stefan.

Paul [Wesley] got his say at PaleyFest when he mentioned how he’d like to see them take that next step and maybe make things romantic, but personally, would you want to see them go there?
Ever since season 2, when Stefan kind of took Caroline under his vampire wing and taught her how to behave like a good little vampire, there’s been a lot of viewers and fans in the Twitterverse expressing their hope of Steroline, I think they call it, to happen one day. So there’s definitely been speculation and some build up, and it would definitely be a bold choice for both of them to engage in any sort of romantic relationship given the friendship of Caroline and Elena and the history between Elena and Stefan. And so you never know what can happen in the future between these two characters, but I imagine it being very dramatic if anything were to happen.

Personally, I was kind of into Caroline and Enzo last week, and I know this week, he opens up a little bit, so is there a connection there?
Well I love that any character that comes on with an accent [is] attracted to Caroline, and I love that the writers gave that a nod in last week’s episode when Enzo goes, “Oh I heard you had a thing for accents.” [Laughs] Caroline and Enzo will be on this road trip together; they’re going to spend some time together, and through Caroline, we’re going to be able to learn more about this new character, Enzo, and why he’s in Mystic Falls, why he’s such great friends with Damon, and a little bit more about his history and who he is, and we’re going to just get to know this new character a little bit.

I’m still trying to work out how I feel about the Travelers, but I know we’re meeting their leader, Markos, this week. Is he the next big bad? What can you tell me about him?
Markos is definitely the next big bad. The Travelers are his legion, his army, so we’re going to learn more about them. We’re going to learn more about the mythology of the Travelers, why they’ve chosen Mystic Falls, and if they are all unified or not.

How does Markos compare to other big bads, to Silas or Klaus or Katherine. Where does he rank?
To be quite honest, we’re still learning about Markos throughout the end of the season, and he’s pretty bad. I think where he differs from the big bads of the past is that what comes with him is a whole new mythology that we’re learning about that is really based in witchcraft. It’s a whole other realm, so what makes him interesting and terrifying is that he’s rooted in [this] new mythology that we’ve been learning about throughout the season, so as we learn about the Travelers, we’re going to learn more about how big and how bad Markos is.

At PaleyFest, EP Caroline Dries also talked about things looking bad and getting worse for Stefan, so what can you tell me about his end-of-season run? Is this going to be awful?
In what way?

I’ll put it this way: Can it be worse than getting stuck in a lock box at the bottom of a quarry?
No, I think being stuck in a lock box is pretty awful. We’re still getting the finale together at this point, but all of the characters are going into the end of the [season] with hope, and if you’ve been a viewer of the series, you know how that turns out sometimes.

Finally, I can’t not touch on Klaroline. At PaleyFest, Joseph Morgan said he kind of feels like it’s more or less a done deal. Is that how you look at the two of them?
Personally, I’ve always looked at the two of them as a done deal, but I guess that’s just the logical side saying, “Why would you ever want to date like a serial murderer to buy you fancy things every once in a while and who’s a terrible awful evil person?” But I guess from the fans and viewers perspective, it’s a little bit more romantic than that. [Laughs] As far as on the series goes, they’re living in two different worlds at this point. Will Caroline ever visit New Orleans? Who knows. Will Klaus ever come back for seconds? Who knows. But at this point it seems that he’s pretty preoccupied in New Orleans and Caroline is definitely preoccupied at college.

Even though Elena and Damon tried to break up at the end of last week's episode of "The Vampire Diaries," it's pretty safe to say that it didn't stick seeing as how the two vampires fell right back into bed with each other the next second. The biggest question on everyone's mind: Is Delena broken up or back together?

Neither, it would seem. That's right, Elena and Damon are going to try being friends with benefits, although "TVD" star Ian Somerhalder doesn't have the highest of hopes for that experiment. "Friends with benefits never ultimately work," Somerhalder tells Zap2it. "They are wonderful for a spell. But hey, you never know."

His co-star Nina Dobrev feels the same way. "Well, we've all seen the movie 'Friends With Benefits' with Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake, right?" Dobrev tells Zap2it. "Everyone always goes into that whole arrangement with optimistic views and wanting it to work but it always gets messy. It's hard to just separate sex and emotions. Those just go together."

Complicating matters is the fact that both Damon and Elena are coming down from being infected with the ripper virus, so things won't be normal for a while. "Damon's head is in the clouds. He's going to need an exorbitant amount of booze and a little love to come out of this thing," Somerhalder says. "Damon has these cycles where he goes through these super intense moments. He lives within the confines of the experiences in which he is given. So he's never truly happy."

He continues, "People are never happy in Mystic Falls because then there would be no drama. No drama, no show. So he's just now focused on the next thing. 'How do I protect my girl?' His girl and his brother are the two most important things in his life."

That might be a little difficult to do, however, now that shady siblings Luke and Liv have woven themselves into Elena's life for mysterious purposes. "Elena is definitely going to butt heads with them in ways that are not positive," Dobrev teases. "I can't give away anything. I have to be a little vague there."

And as for Elena's relationship with Jeremy, things are about to take a hard left turn when Jeremy makes a decision that leaves Elena devastated. What's he gotten himself into?

"All I can say is that it's been great to play and watch Elena grow as a character," Dobrev says. "She's had to make a lot of really difficult decisions that have influenced herself and others around her, and now Jeremy is going to have to make one that is similar. So she will be majorly affected by it but because of what she has gone through, she understands, as well. She knows that she has to let him be his own person and make his own decisions because she did the same."

"The Vampire Diaries" airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.

Any Vampire Diaries scoop on Bonnie? — Joshua
Her role as the anchor to the "other side" is about to get extra-complicated — and possibly fatal! "We raise the question, 'Can you even kill Bonnie? What would happen?'" executive producer Caroline Dries tells me. Fortunately, there will be strong motivation to keep Bonnie alive. "When she's in danger, the whole other side is in jeopardy, so it's a big deal to keep her safe," Dries says.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES
“Man on Fire” — (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (Content Rating TBD) (HDTV)

FLASHBACKS TO THE 1960s — Stefan (Paul Wesley) tries to distract Elena (Nina Dobrev) from obsessing about the state of her relationship with Damon (Ian Somerhalder), while Bonnie (Kat Graham) does her best to be realistic about how the changes happening on the Other Side will affect her existence as the Anchor. Damon demands the Traveler knife, forcing Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and Matt (Zach Roerig) to admit it has gone missing. Through flashbacks to election night, 1960, Enzo (guest star Michael Malarkey) reveals to Elena, Stefan and Bonnie that he has learned what happened to his long-lost love, Maggie (guest star Heather Hemmens), and then, with the unwilling help of Liv (guest star Penelope Mitchell) and Luke (guest star Chris Brochu), things take an ugly turn. Trying to calm Enzo down, Damon intervenes, but his words cause Enzo to make a desperate and dangerous decision that leads to a violent confrontation with Stefan. Finally, Markos (guest star Raffi Barsoumian) enlists Sloan’s (guest star Caitlin McHugh) help in a ritual designed to break an ancient curse against the Travelers. Tyler (Michael Trevino) is forced to play a dangerous part in the ritual, while witnessing the incredible power the Travelers now possess. Michael Allowitz directed the episode written by Melinda Hsu Taylor & Matthew D’Ambrosio (#519).

'The Vampire Diaries' EPs dish on Season 5 finale, promise love for Matt in Season 6

As "The Vampire Diaries" gears up for what is sure to be an insane Season 5 finale, here's something almost too-good-to-be-true for Season 6 ... Matty Blue Eyes (Zach Roerig) is finally getting some love.

The lone human on The CW series has been very unlucky in love in the past, most recently when his ... well, not a relationship, but whatever it was he had with Nadia (Olga Fonda) ended abruptly with her death, caused by his BFF Tyler's (Michael Trevino) werewolf bite. Oops?

When Zap2it asked "TVD" executive producer Caroline Dries at PaleyFest if Matt will ever find love, she dropped this little nugget that should make Matt Donovan fans very happy. "Poor Matt," Dries says with a laugh. "Yes, I think so."

When pushed to elaborate, Dries obliged. "We're going to try something in Season 6 that we've been percolating on that I think will really help Matt's storyline," Dries says. "It's hard to give him these overarching love storylines because we're just like, what's the genre? Genre, genre, genre. It's hard because we have like 40 hundred thousand characters on the show, you know? To give them all very interesting, dynamic story lines is hard but we have something planned for him."

And that's not all the scoop we squeezed out of Dries -- she also revealed that she had just officially handed the finale script in. "The finale will be emotional," Dries says. "We'll get to see a lot of our favorite friends from the past possibly pop in. Basically, every place on the show where s*** can possibly go wrong, it goes wrong. Just when you think, oh it can't get worse than that, it does."

Zap2it also caught up with executive producer Julie Plec, who revealed a little more detail about the finale. "There are going to be a lot of goodbyes as we realize The Other Side is disintegrating and not everybody is going to survive that," Plec warns. "We're going to have to say goodbye to some characters that we've grown to love over the years."

Emotional goodbyes, high-stakes problems and familiar faces popping up? Sounds like the perfect "TVD" finale. But there is one thing fans shouldn't expect to see: Crossovers with "The Originals."

"Not this season," Dries says. "It is exhausting trying to schedule those guys. It's so weird to me, now watching 'The Originals,' they're so deep into it. Doesn't it feel like it's a completely different tone than our show? I know people want Caroline to go over there, but I'm trying to picture her being in New Orleans, and it just doesn't feel like a good fit. So the rest of this season, no more crossovers."

Don't go sharpening your pitchforks just yet, though. "Next season, that's a whole new can of worms," Dries says with a laugh.

"The Vampire Diaries" returns with all-new episodes Thursday, April 17 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.

Chloe: Any TVD goodies to share?!
We're hearing Stelena fans will not want to miss Thursday night's episode, even if there's a slight twist to all the Stefan and Elena goodness. But is there hope for a legitimate reunion between the duo? "Those two are like perpetually a pendulum that swings. There's really no algorithm," Paul Wesley says. "I don't think anything that happens is permanent, so the answer to that question is that I'm sure they'll work it out in the end." (Psst…check back with us tomorrow for scoop on Stefan and Caroline!)

Sure, but it's not exactly good news! As the war between the witches and the Travelers heats up, our heroes will learn that quite a few Mystic Falls residents — including more than one regular character — have Passengers in them. So, ask yourself this: Who do the Travelers need to control?

The CW has released the official synopsis for The Vampire Diaries, What Lies Beneath

(EP520), airing Thurday, May 1st at 8/7c. Highlight for spoilers:

A CABIN IN THE WOODS — When Tyler (Michael Trevino) turns up at the Salvatore house with the news that Markos’ (guest star Raffi Barsoumian) plan to break the witches’ curse puts Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) in imminent danger, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) suggests they hide out in the remote cabin once owned by Caroline’s (Candice Accola) father. Once there, it becomes obvious to Caroline that Stefan and Elena are keeping a secret, so Damon (Ian Somerhalder) comes up with a parlor game designed to expose the truth. A ghostly presence at the cabin uses violence and fire to make itself known. Meanwhile, Matt (Zach Roerig) takes charge of Tyler’s plan to get information from one of the Travelers, and Bonnie (Kat Graham) continues to keep the truth about the Other Side from Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), despite warnings from Grams (guest star Jasmine Guy). Joshua Butler directed the episode written by Elisabeth R. Finch & Holly Brix (#520).

Stefan-Elena fans will love this week's episode, which features a ton of what-if scenes between the duo. The downside is that the scenes are all dreams related to the doppelganger prophecy, which will finally be fully explained! Elsewhere, look for a familiar face to pop up —but the character's return won't bring good news.

There is no more confusion about who The Travelers are and what they want: to break a centuries-old witches' curse so they can finally settle. And if their leader Markos is successful, magic would be destroyed, which could be catastrophic for Bonnie and the other side. But perhaps Bonnie is headed to a new world — and she won't be alone. "[The finale] definitely establishes new parameters in the environment we'll be shooting in Season 6," Paul Wesley teases. "They reset things in a way, and the writers have the ability to now change the circumstances and locations of where the show takes place."

Is Enzo is sticking around on The Vampire Diaries? I love him! — Tina
Then you'll love Thursday's very Enzo-centric episode! While he'll finally learn the truth about Maggie, he also puts Stefan and Elena in grave danger, which ultimately leads to an epic battle among the three. The question is: How will Damon handle being caught in the middle?

@Ideserveyou: #AskKristin are Damon fans going to suffer in the season finale?
Damon fans, start gearing up for an emotional hour when The Vampire Diaries signs off in May. "There's quite a lot of suffering and celebration in the last two episodes," Julie Plec warned teased. "Because of Markos's efforts to make the town of Mystic Falls a magic-free zone and the imminent destruction of the Other Side, lots of lives are in jeopardy and Damon has to, as he says, 'strap on his hero hair.'"

PRE-FINALE EPISODES | As the Travelers move forward with their plans, Stefan and Elena will develop an "us-against-the-world" mentality, executive producer Caroline Dries teases. "They'll need to lean on this strong connection to get through it." Meanwhile, as Bonnie makes "brave choices" about the Other Side's big dilemma, Dries reminds us, "There's always a sacrifice, and her relationship with Jeremy will certainly be one of the things that complicates everything." As for Stefan and Caroline's undeniable... something, Dries encourages patience: "Our plan is to let this friendship evolve naturally and watch what happens when feelings start to emerge, ever so slowly, from one of them and how that begins to complicate things."

MAY 15 SEASON FINALE | The final hour of Season 5 culminates in an all-out battle for Mystic Falls -- against the Travelers, of course. Iin addition to the usual "blood, death and tears," Dries says to brace for more reunions with "faces that we've been missing over the series." (That's right, she said "series.") She also promises the finale "will end in true Vampire Diaries fashion, with a stunning cliffhanger that leaves us thinking, 'Wait, what? No. Tell me that didn't just happen.'"

'Vampire Diaries' EP, Ian Somerhalder on Romantic 'Purgatory' and 'Giant' Finale

Executive producer Caroline Dries revealed that season six opens with the core characters "picking up the pieces."

Damon and Elena are off again on The Vampire Diaries -- and it's not going to get any better.

"One of the best scenes [last week] was when Damon said, 'I don't want to look at you, I don't want to hear your voice and I definitely don't want to be your friend.' It was just so heartbreaking," said executive producer Caroline Dries at a recent screening.

The volatile (off-again) couple has significantly less interaction in Wednesday's flashback-heavy episode, "Man on Fire," which centers on Enzo, desperate to avenge the death of his only love, who died Game of Thrones style. Following Damon's decision to part ways with Elena, at least for the time being, having Damon and Elena apart was the natural next step and the writers saw it as a welcome challenge. "Let's try to do a whole episode where Damon doesn't look at Elena," she hinted.

In contrast, next week's episode -- deemed as the Cabin in the Woods hour by Dries -- sees Damon and Elena in tight quarters, prompting them to deal with their bubbling feelings.

"We purposefully threw them into a world together where they can't help but be literally on top of each other. They can't be away from each other. They can't be close to each other," Dries said. "We're trying to play into the drama of them now being in this weird purgatory in the relationship where it's like, how can we act when we can't escape each other?"

As Ian Somerhalder tells it, what makes Damon and Elena -- who may not be the best match on paper -- fascinating to watch is their physical and emotional pull toward each other. (Forget the doppelganger faux-prophecy!)

"It's always been that way with Elena. There's always this pushing and pulling," said Somerhalder. "It really does make it a very dynamic component to their relationship that creates tension, chemistry. It's pretty evident and it's there to stay for a while. It's always uncomfortable. It's like someone running your hands on a chalkboard sometimes."

"Every time one of them is in the room with the other, it's like they don't have to say anything but their tension or chemistry exists," added Dries. "I think that's what makes them as a couple so powerful. Even if the storyline is them not dating, it's still a love story."

Speaking of Enzo, Damon's only friend is put front and center in this week's installment, when he believes Stefan (as the Ripper in the 1960s) is responsible for killing his old flame. "Enzo takes matters into his own hands when the love of his life who he's been looking for is actually the person who killed him and is supposedly the hero of the series," Dries previewed. But Enzo may be surprised to discover the ultimate truth. "I think he wished he never found out what happened to Maggie because he becomes a different person," she added.

Five nuggets from the rest of the season:

- Death means something different on Vampire Diaries, with those who have died often returning in visions or as ghosts, but Dries revealed that there will "definitely" be permanent death. At least three characters will die, for real.

- Dries revealed that the writers are already plotting season six and promised that as a lead-up to the finale, "this giant thing happens" in the finale that brings Elena, Damon, Stefan and Co. to a different place than they were before. "Season six will be a lot of bringing people back together," she teased, "and picking up the pieces."

- The love is not lost between Damon and Jeremy, who gets some of Damon's verbal zingers in Wednesday's episode. "When Damon looks at Jeremy, it's the source of so much annoyance by virtue of having to protect him. If he hurt him, he wasn't going to get laid or breakfast in the morning, so there was that little-brother annoyance," Somerhalder said.

- Caroline has her eye on someone new in the romance department. "She's got a little relationship/crush/feelings for someone that will creep up to the surface and that is going to cause potential rifts between her and and one of her friends," Dries teased, prompting Caroline to push that aside. "It's a little under the surface, and moving into season six, we're going to see her actually set her sights on someone and make the move."

- Dries revealed that there is "definitely" a chance for familiar faces to pop up again. "It's basically a storage facility for all of our friends," she joked of the Other Side.

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
