His character Jimmy Borelli doesn’t make a great first impression. Late for his very first shift, a duct-taped and toilet paper-wrapped Jimmy is dumped at 51 by his older brother, a fellow firefighter from a different house. “He’s summarily told to hit [the road] by Boden,” EP Matt Olmstead teases. “He has to work his way back to the good graces of Boden to try and get back in 51.” But Casey sees more to this candidate with a complicated history and “realizes this guy could be a really great firefighter.”

Ausiello: Not much is happening — at least romantically — between them at the start of the season, since Erin is still spiraling from last May’s cliffhanger. Jay is “just worried about her surviving,” executive producer Matt Olmstead tells TVLine. “Then once she gets her feet [back] under her, we may have the romance kick back in.” May?! Clarifies Olmstead: “I’m pretty sure it’s going to kick back in.”

CHICAGO FIRE

Things are looking dark for Casey following his kidnapping, because "what he had to do to survive that ordeal… would haunt a lot of people," executive producer Matt Olmstead previews. But Dawson's unexpected pregnancy news pulls Casey out of the doom and gloom. (Too bad it also means she's no longer a firefighter candidate and has to move to arson.) Meanwhile, Severide's career takes a knock with the introduction of Brian White's Captain Dallas Patterson, who takes over running the rescue squad. "A chief comes in above Boden and makes it apparent that Severide's a hell of a firefighter, but he lists all the people that rotated through the squad," Olmstead explains. "As far as a manager, he's not really doing a good job." But leave it to Severide to find a new love interest (Continuum's Rachel Nichols) at a training program he's forced to attend because he's been demoted.

BONUS SPOILER!: Sorry, but medic Sylvie's hook-up with Chicago P.D.'s Roman was "a one-off," Olmstead reveals. "Maybe down the road they will [get together], but romances are tough to sustain over two shows."

Oliver Platt, who plays Chicago Med shrink Dr. Daniel Charles, will be keeping busy ahead of the spinoff’s launch — on both P.D. and Fire. For Lindsay’s rehabilitation on the former., “Voight has some really strict conditions she has to meet,” executive producer Matt Olmstead previews. “He wants her to meet with Dr. Charles, so she goes there and tries to work him and deflect — ‘Just tell my boss we met’ – but he’s a little smarter than that. She then comes back later and kind of opens up a bit to him. They talk about her dad a little.” Charles will also assist the Fire crew after “Brett and Chili go through a pretty heavy duty first call in the first episode” and the former develops a “fixation” about the well-being of a baby.

Chicago Fire has promoted new cast member Steven R. McQueen to series regular, SpoilerTV has confirmed. He was cast in a recurring role in July.

McQueen plays Jimmy Borrelli, the newest candidate at Firehouse 51.
