Dare away! During Vlada Gelman’s recent chat with the “brothers,” Jensen Ackles said he plans to break his recent streak of directing an early-season episode, explaining, “I just decided to take the first part of the season easy. Twenty-three episodes [per season] is a long, long shoot, and I usually would direct the first episode that we would film… so it’s basically like sprinting the first several miles of a marathon, which doesn’t really work if you’re a good runner. You want to pace yourself, so I’m going to pace myself this year.”

Supernatural fans, rejoice: Sam Winchester lives!
The last we left the Winchesters, God and Amara had found peace — and disappeared to somewhere unknown — leaving behind a present for Dean (Jensen Ackles): Mary Winchester (Samantha Smith) is back from the dead! And yet, Sam (Jared Padalecki) might not be around to see her. When Sam returned home to the bunker, he met a Woman of Letters, and when he tried to approach her, the episode ended with a gunshot.
During Supernatural’s Comic-Con panel on Sunday, Padalecki was on hand to assure fans that Sam is back in season 12. “Thankfully, Sam Winchester is alive,” he said. “Because he’s not a lose-chester.” See also Comic-Con: Everything you need to know before the 'Supernatural' panel 'Supernatural': Why season 11 is the show's best in six years 'Supernatural' appoints new showrunners for season 12
In season 12, we’ll get more info about the woman who shot Sam, who is a member of the British Men of Letters. “We find out more about the Men of Letters and their worldwide society,” Padalecki said. “We’ll learn more about what she wants and what they want. Obviously she and Sam didn’t start out on the right foot. From the looks of things in the promo, [in which Sam is being tortured], we see they’re not off to a great start, but we don’t know why or what happens.”
But the arrival of Mary was an even bigger topic during the panel, with Smith joining the boys on stage. “It certainly presents a dynamic that we haven’t had ever,” Ackles said. “The interesting thing is when Mom left, Sam was a baby and Dean was a child. The children that she knew are now men, so the relationship was nonexistent. It’s going to be an interesting situation of them trying to bridge that massive gap that occurred over the past 30-odd years. It also brings into question how is she going to plug herself into their lives? Is that going to leave the brothers vulnerable?” For instance, the baddies could use Mary, who also used to be a hunter, to hurt the boys.
“There’s a lot to consider,” Smith said. “Being dead, now alive with a big gap in the middle. My sons are now older and taller than I am. I’ve always loved Mary and to be able to experience her from a whole different perspective is incredibly fun for me. To not just be passing through as a ghost is actually really fun. It could go anywhere, so I’m having a good time with that.”
Castiel (Misha Collins) knows how important Mary is in the origin story of the Winchester brothers and has “a very cool dynamic” with her, according to executive producer Andrew Dabb. “There’s an interesting dynamic between the two of us, because in a way we’re outsiders and we’re sharing something in that,” Collins said, adding that Cas has his mojo back this season. “Cas is back to a little bit of Cas from season 4. He’s angry, and he’s in a fighting spirit. He’s after Lucifer. Now that Mary is back, he’s also tattletaling a lot.”
“We’ve still got Lucifer out there, so there’s a hunt for Lucifer,” executive producer Bob Singer said, noting that this season is going back to basics. “You don’t get bigger than God. This year we can’t top all that… [We’re going to] tell smaller stories, some good old-fashioned horror stories. We’ve set up the British Men of Letters; they’ll be part of what we’re doing.”
Speaking of Lucifer, he’s going to be trying out a number of different vessels when the show returns. “The first vessel he feels comfortable with is a rockstar,” Singer said. “His name is Vince Vincente. We’ll be seeing him in a couple episodes early on.” That rockstar will be portrayed by musician Rick Springfield.
Supernatural returns Thursday, Oct. 13 at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.

Supernatural' Season 12: Why Will The Men Of Letters Torture Sam? Jared Padalecki Explains First Promo [VIDEO]

The only way the Supernatural season 12 premiere could go worse for Sam Winchester is if he was playing Lucifer's meat suit. Shot, tortured, and convinced of his brother's demise, the hunter will open the fall run in dire straights.
Lady Toni Bevell (Elizabeth Blackmore) burst onto the scene in the season 11 finale, and, in an effort to perpetuate the Men of Letters anti-hunter bias, the Brit believes Sam and Dean (Jensen Ackles) are just a bunch of know-nothing jacked up killers. We, of course, know better. Bevell, however, will use a little enhanced interrogation to get the truth out of an injured Sammy (Jared Padalecki).
"The Brits think they know some things about us that they might be mistaken about, [and] some things they might be right about, but I think the Brits are trying to figure out why we're not run the way they are," Padalecki told EnStars at San Diego Comic-Con. "We're not legit Men of Letters. I mean, were legacies, so I guess you could argue we're kind of Men of Letters, but we weren't initiated; we didn't study the things they studied. They are much more regimented and structured, and [they] are trying to figure out if Sam and Dean are lying and they actually do have ulterior motives or if they really are [what they seem]."
Rude. This meeting probably would have gone better had the British MOL not gate crashed the bunker on arguably one of the worst days of Sam's life.
"It was kind of an unfortunate miscommunication. Sam though his brother was dead, so he was pissed and sad and the British Men of Letters didn't exactly put their best foot forward. I think Sam probably figures, 'aren't we all on the same team? This isn't the way this should have started,'" Padalecki explained.
With the Winchesters' collective problem with authority, it remains to be seen how the boys will handle the secret societies' attempt to seize control. Not well, probably. John's sons don't exactly play well with others (probably because those "others" are always hell bent on screwing them over).
"Sam and Dean don't really answer to anybody...they're not used to having higher powers to answer to, so we're going to see worlds collide," the actor teased.

'Supernatural' Interview: Jensen Ackles on Having Mary Back, Looking for Sam and More Thursday, July 28, 2016
May is back and that brings a mix of emotions to Supernatural season 12, as Jensen Ackles previewed at San Diego Comic-Con. BuddyTV also got the scoop on when the new season picks up and how it's getting back to the basics.
Supernatural Season 12 Spoilers: Back to the Basics and the Return of Mary Winchester>>>
Watch the video interview with Jensen Ackles:
Here are the highlights:
"There's a lot of mixed emotions" for Dean having his mother back. "He's confused, he's excited, but you have to remember, she's a stranger to him and he's a stranger to her."
Mary's going to have to adjust to life 30+ years later, and that includes things like modern technology and the fact that her sons are doing exactly what "she tried so desperately to get out of when she was alive": hunting.
"There's going to be some tension, there's going to be some emotion," to having Mary back. "Sure, there's joy, but there's a lot of hesitancy there too because now she's also another avenue to get at the brothers. Something happens to her... There's vulnerability that comes with her presence."
When the season begins, Dean doesn't know that the London chapter of the Men of Letters have gotten their hands on Sam and Sam doesn't know that Dean's alive. Sam's thinking his brother's not coming for him, and Dean's expecting to show up at the bunker with, "Hey, Mom's back." That's where the new season picks up, and "then it very quickly becomes Liam Neeson from Taken."
They're going to be "getting back to the basis of what Supernatural is." Eventually Sam and Dean are reunited (though he hadn't read that script yet), and "it'll get back to them taking cases, driving down the road, listening to rock music and hunting things that go bump in the night," Ackles previewed. "There are obviously these added elements of the Men of Letters, Mom, Lucifer's running wild, so it'll tricky to navigate."
While Dean would like to do something more final with whatever the supernatural world is, "it's what he knows, so he's going to go back to doing what he does best."
Supernatural season 12 premieres Thursday, October 13 at 9pm on the CW.

Oh, this is a bit more than “anything.” “We’ve got something really cool coming up in Episode 5, where it will be the triumphant or not so triumphant return of the Thule, who have decided to enact their master plan and bring back Hitler,” showrunner Andrew Dabb tells us. “And the way we describe our Hitler is ‘a psychotic Richard Simmons,’ so a little different than the standard portrayal. Sam and Dean are going to fight Hitler, and that’s opening up some interesting doors for us in terms of just doing some more crazy stuff.”

'Supernatural' Interview: Jared Padalecki on the More 'Structured' British Men of Letters, Playing a Son and More
When Supernatural season 11 ended, things were not great for Sam -- and that's a bit of an understatement. He returned to the bunker thinking his brother was dead, only to be confronted by a member of the British Men of Letters who then shot him. And things aren't going to get better, as Jared Padalecki previewed at San Diego Comic-Con.
Watch the video interview with Jared Padalecki:
Here are the highlights:
He wasn't surprised when he read that Sam is being tortured.
"It's fun work to do. For me, it seems like a badge of honor or trust that they're giving me such difficult stuff," Padalecki shared. "As far as where it fits in the story, I think it's neat because I think you see Sam in a funny position where he's like, 'Wait, y'all are British Men of Letters? We're on the same side, what's going on?'"
The British Men of Letters have a very different way of going about things. "Sam and Dean aren't used to being told what to do or how to do it or answering to any sort of hierarchy," he explained. The British Men of Letters are more "structured and regimented," and that's "really foreign to the boys." Plus, they didn't start off on the right foot.
Though he wishes there would have been a conversation between Sam and God, with the Darkness around, it became a matter of triage.
Padalecki is excited to play a son, pointing out that while John has been on the show, he and Sam didn't get along and Sam left when he could for Stanford. Now he has a mother he loves but doesn't know, and since she too is a hunter, instead of telling Sam and Dean, "All right, guys, call me when you get home, here's a sandwich," she'll say, "I'm in." And for Sam, it'll be "We've lost you before..."

Question: Any intel on the English Rose on Supernatural? —Sue
Ausiello: Lady Toni Bevell (Elizabeth Blackmore) and her brethren across the pond certainly “didn’t start off on the right foot” with the Winchesters, seeing as how she shot Sam in last May’s finale, notes Jared Padalecki. Indeed, as co-showrunner Andrew Dabb explains, “Toni is very against Dean and Sam and has studied them and has very strong opinions about them, [which are] not positive.” That said, Dabb teases that a compromise of sorts may be in the offing seeing as how “there are other people in the British Men of Letters who want to take a different approach [with the Winchesters].”

The Thule Society was first introduced in season 8 of SUPERNATURAL. According to show lore, the organization originated in Europe, had access to magic, and was sponsored by the Nazi party in its early days. The Winchesters and their allies have managed to defeat the Thule twice now, most recently in the episode “The Vessel”, when a female member of the Men of Letters prevented the Thule from getting the Hand of God — a magical artifact with tremendous power.
The Winchesters will be doing battle with the Thule Society again in this week’s episode when they learn that the Thule are attempting to resurrect its old leader.
During a visit to Vancouver last week*, SUPERNATURAL stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles (joined by Misha Collins), spoke to journalists about this week’s episode, the legacy of Sam’s psychic powers, the methods of the British Men of Letters, and how the boys are still trying to reconnect with their resurrected mother.
Winchesters vs. Thules. “We find out that the Thule, who are back….we believe they may have been in control or in possession of a cursed object of sorts that might have a bit of Hitler’s soul,” Padalecki teased. “And they’re trying to do a Jurassic Park and take the amber out of the tree sap and the mosquito DNA or whatever. Obviously we don’t know how it’s going and so we have to kind of go back and track the Thule and figure out if, in fact, they have succeeded. Though Hitler’s vessel, thankfully, is gone.” However, while Hitler’s vessel may be gone, you should expect to see the “SUPERNATURAL take on what Hitler was really like behind the camera.”
Sam’s Powers. Sam hasn’t used his psychic powers in many years, but the last episode brought them to the forefront when he found another psychic — Magda — who was punished by her deeply religious family for the abilities she was unable to control. Sam managed to get through to her rage by recounting his own experience with the same types of powers. But that doesn’t mean that these abilities will be returning, according to Padalecki. His conversation with Magda was about connecting with her and trying to get her to look past her desire for revenge: “I don’t think it’s something he feels is going to come back or he’s hoping will come back. I think he probably – even though there were obvious benefits, I think he’s probably hoping it doesn’t come back, but he acknowledges it. He considers it part of himself.”
The British Men of Letters. At the end of the last episode we met the mysterious Mr. Ketch, who is cleaning up the “messes” that the Winchesters leave behind. While the pair chose to let psychic Magda live and repair her life after she was held captive by her own mother, Ketch and the British MOL executed her. This is a storyline that will continue to plague the brothers, according to Ackles: “It’s interesting, we’re going to see that storyline get fleshed out in the second half of the season. There’s gonna be some recruitment attempts, some disagreements about methods of hunting, and that will certainly boil to a point. But as of right now, [the British MOL] are trying their method of trying to include us by showing that they have a superior method of dealing with these things than we do, and they’re trying to get us on board with that. But I think we’ll find out in the future that maybe their methods aren’t the best way.” Padalecki called back to an older storyline, saying that it felt familiar in these circumstances: “For me it’s reminiscent of season 6 when Sam was soulless and kind of behaved much the same way the British Men of Letters are behaving now, or at least in their hunting tactics and Dean was obviously not, so it’s fun to revisit that.”
Reconnecting with Mom. In the last episode we also saw the brothers try to deal with losing Mary all over again. This time their mother chose to take a bit of space away from her boys in order to deal with being overwhelmed after recently being brought back to life. The brothers dealt with this fresh loss in different ways — Sam was understanding of Mary’s need for space, but Dean felt incredibly hurt by her decision. By the end of the episode he seemed more accepting of it when he received a text from Mary saying that she would always be their mother and that she loved them both. But the awkwardness will continue as the boys struggle to learn the real life person behind the mythical figure Mary has been all their lives. Ackles explained that “There are certainly two different relationships going on, from Sam’s perspective and then from my perspective as well, or rather Dean’s perspective. Because Sam never had a relationship with mom. He was an infant. And Dean didn’t have much of one either. A lot of what he knows and what he remembers about his mother was kind of dictated to him by his father. It’s more his father’s memories of her than it is Dean’s established memories of her. But it’s unique because she’s their mother, but she’s also kind of a stranger. Obviously the brothers are strangers to her as well, which is why you see this struggle to find their footing in the relationship because it is a forced situation. And at least from Dean’s perspective, he doesn’t really know how to fit. He doesn’t know how to categorize the relationship. It’s an awkward thing which I think lends itself to good story.”

Will we see more of Mr. Ketch when Supernatural returns? — David
Not only will fans be seeing more of Mr. Ketch, but they’ll be seeing more from the British Men of Letters in general. “The British Men of Letters are very big in the second half [of the season],” showrunner Robert Singer says. “They’re certainly helpful in episode 9, and then we play them out in a really interesting way. I think the first half of the season with the British Men of Letters was a little bit of a tease letting the audience know what their capabilities were and what their goals were, and they’re quite heavy in the second half.” Maybe they can help with that whole spawn of Satan situation?

Question: Any word on whether Jim Beaver will be making an appearance on Supernatural this season? It just wouldn’t seem right to not have Bobby at least make one appearance. —Jane
Ausiello: There are “no plans as of right now,” but some other familiar faces will be back this season, executive producer Andrew Dabb tells TVLine. Among them: deaf hunter Eileen Leahy, teen wannabe hunter Claire Novak and Sheriff Donna Hanscum. “Obviously, as we’re building up the British hunters, we’re also building up, or in some cases re-establishing, our American hunters,” the EP says. “It’s a really cool opportunity to bring in people like that, some of whom we’ve seen pretty recently, and some of whom we haven’t seen for quite a while.”
Question: Can the show give us any scoop on Supernatural Episode 11, which is rumored to have a de-aged Dean? —Kim
Ausiello: Dean’s not physically de-aging, but rather “trapped in a Memento-type loop, where he’s kind of losing his memory a little bit,” Dabb previews. “For him, as someone who struggles with all the baggage from years and years of doing a very, very difficult job, it almost becomes freeing, in a way. So you’re going to see a Dean that is a lot more fun and childlike. Jensen [Ackles] does a great job. Then it becomes a much more tragic story as he starts to forget Sam — and himself.”
