- ‘Supernatural’ Sidekicks Land Online Spin-Off
by Matt Webb Mitovich Jan 26th, 2010 | 4:32 PM | Comments 4
‘Supernatural’s Ghostfacers are coming to a computer screen near you. Led by Ed Zeddmore (’CSI: NY’s A.J. Buckley) and Harry Spengler (Travis Wester), the wisecracking ghost hunters made their ‘Supernatural’ debut in the Season 1 episode “Hell House” and have since returned twice, most recently in March 2009.
Buckley and Wester not only lead the missions as Ed and Harry, they are also writers on the spin-off series, which will premiere on TheWB.com and CWTV.com.
Brittany Ishibashi (‘E-Ring‘) and Austin Basis (‘Life Unexpected’) round out the Ghostfacers team.
A series of 10 three-minute ‘Ghostfacers” episodes is planned and in production now in Los Angeles, with the premiere date TBD. The first outing revolves around a theater haunted by the specter of a starlet (played by ‘Nip/Tuck’s Kelly Carlson).
‘Ghostfacers’ is being produced by McG’s Wonderland and Warner Bros. TV. ‘Supernatural’ creator Eric Kripke is among the project’s exec producers.

ONLINE SPIRITS BEWARE: THE "GHOSTFACERS" FROM THE HIT SHOW "SUPERNATURAL" ARE BACK WITH A NEW WEB SERIES
Production Begins on a Digital Brand Extension Investigating New Paranormal Mysteries Online, Soon to be Available on TheWB.com and CWTV.com
Kelly Carlson ("Nip/Tuck") Guest Stars as the Ghost of an Aspiring Actress Haunting a Local Theatre
BURBANK, Calif. (January 26, 2010) – The world's greatest self-proclaimed ghost hunters are back on the case, now in an original digital series for both TheWB.com and CWTV.com. A shortform brand extension of the hit CW/Warner Bros. Television series "Supernatural," "Ghostfacers" will focus on a team of fearless and sometimes comical "professional" ghost hunters who investigate the paranormal and record their own adventures in documentary-style episodes. The team originally made their debut during the first season of "Supernatural" in the episode 'Hell House,' and later appeared in a self-titled episode during season three. In this first installment of the new series, the "Ghostfacers" investigate the haunting of a local theatre by the ghost of a young starlet – played by Kelly Carlson ("Nip/Tuck") – who, according to legend, was murdered in front of her dressing room mirror.
The series is currently in production in Los Angeles with an initial run of 10 three-minute episodes. Fans will have access to ancillary content on TheWB.com and CWTV.com, including gag reels and actor confessionals, behind-the-scenes video clips, photo galleries and more. Fans hungry for more "Ghostfacers" mythology can find additional images, character bios and video on the "Ghostfacers" website (www.Ghostfacers.com).
In addition to Carlson guest starring, "Ghostfacers" stars AJ Buckley ("CSI: NY," "Skateland") as Ed Zeddmore, the team's enthusiastic leader. Travis Wester ("Bones," "Euro Trip," "Cold Case," "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation") stars as Harry Spengler, the co-founder of the team and tactical specialist. Brittany Ishibashi ("Supernatural," "Notes From the Underbelly") is Maggie Zeddmore, Ed's adopted sister and the team's tech-genius. Austin Basis ("Life Unexpected," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Navy: NCIS") stars as Kenny Spruce, the videographer and occasional shaman.
From Wonderland Sound and Vision ("Supernatural," "Chuck," "Sorority Forever") in association with Studio 2.0, "Ghostfacers" is executive produced by McG, Peter Johnson, Jeff Grosvenor, Eric Kripke and Phil Sgriccia. The series is written by A.J. Buckley, Patrick J. Doody, Chris Valenziano and Travis Wester. "Ghostfacers" characters were created for "Supernatural" by Trey Callaway and first appeared in the first season episode 'Hell House.' The Ghostfacers concept was later expanded upon by "Supernatural" executive producer and writer Ben Edlund in the third season episode, "Ghostfacers." source: Deamontv.com

On retrouvera donc A.J.

- The Ghostfacers Speak...
On a seemingly normal Tuesday afternoon I took a break from sorting through press releases and screening upcoming episodes of cable comedies to dial into a conference call style interview with the writers, directors, and stars of the upcoming Ghostfacers web series, AJ Buckley and Travis Wester. All was going well as we introduced ourselves to each other, but all of a sudden and out of the blue, our voices began to echo in an eerie and screechy sound.
I logged myself out of the call and dialed back in, and the guys were laughing and chatting jovially but neither of them had any idea what had occurred. I offered a theory, though: one of the ghosts or other worldly spirits (maybe even that of their deceased intern, Corbett!) must have tried to infiltrate the call, considering itself the true star and creator of the show and wanting its fair fifteen minutes.
It was an interesting thing to occur to a reporter, considering their characters have a tendency to see a ghost but fumble around and somehow miss capturing the moment, in all of its glory, on camera. But as Buckley laughed and pointed out, they're doing something right these days because now I've "bared witness."
Once the spirits settled down, though, the guys and I had some fun joking about tantrums and diva behavior on set, what to expect from their new spin-off web series, and what they really think of the fan conventions they have attended.
It's been a few years since the "Ghostfacers" episode on Supernatural, and you guys have done some originals on the internet since then, so have your characters of Harry and Ed reached a new level of expertise when we "re-meet" them, so to speak, in the web series? Or are they still kind of bumbling, making mistakes and learning as they go? T.W: I think you kind of hit the nail on the head with "learning as they go." I mean, they've definitely learned some stuff over the past couple of years. The thing about the Ghostfacers is that they're not stupid. They're not going to make the same mistakes over and over and over again. When they encounter new elements of the supernatural, they do learn, they just might not learn the right thing or the right lessons...We did a spot in season four where we've done our research and we've achieved a certain level of how to deal spirits and ghosts specifically and maybe the supernatural in general. And I think with the web series, what we're looking to do, is kind of explore how maybe someone without the steely-jawed courage needed to be a hunter can still go about having an effect and an impact when it comes to the battle with evil.
A.J.B: I think Ed and Harry have kind of been on this mission...and I don't think they really fully understand why they're on this mission or what the bigger picture is. I think there's this overall arc of where they're going. It's sort of when a Jedi starts to learn his powers at the beginning; he doesn't know it's inside him, but when he touches on it, greatness happens. Underneath the comedy and their sort of learning curve, there will be a bigger picture of why is it these guys-- out of all of the ghost hunter, paranormal experience reality type shows-- actually encounter the supernatural and have experiences with them? And where will the road take them, while being able to kind of sit back and laugh and enjoy the ride.
Harry and Ed aren't the professionals Dean and Sam were when we first met them. It's almost as if we're getting a glimpse into being trained on the job when we see them hunt down a ghost. How much of the web series is going to feature elements or spirits or lore that aren't what your characters were expecting to find? A.J.B: I think it's always going to be something within the ghost world but not what we thought it would be. We're involved in a lot bigger of a picture than we really know. The great thing about the show is that we'll be able to mix it up.
Now as "hybrids," writing and directing and acting, how much of the web series is what is on the page, played out beat by beat, and how much of it is you guys coming up with an idea or an outline or sketch and then improving as you go? T.W: If it's not 100% of what we write, I go absolutely ballistic!
A.J.B: Travis does...Travis does.
T.W: If someone says "he" instead of the character's actual name, which is on the page, I will absolutely go apesh*t.
A.J.B: [Laughing] Did you ever see the Christian Bale set [rant]?
Of course! T.W: Multiple that by about fifty!
Okay, so that will be on the DVD release, I'm sure. T.W: You can ask our producers this. I think [the footage] was about fifty percent of us shooting and fifty percent of me just screaming.
That makes for interesting footage as well, so I'm sure you can get some use out of that! T.W: Oh yeah, just talk to our producer; he was on set every day with us!
A.J.B: Going back to the first day that Eric [Kripke] pulled us in the office and said 'So we want to do this spin-off,' and he approached it as 'Would you guys be interested in writing it?' And we waited until we were in the hallway-- we played it cool like 'Oh sure, no problem'-- but when we got in the hallway, we were jumping up in the air. Travis and I d idn't know each other before Supernatural at all, so our ability as a writing team, and how we compliment each other in different areas is one of those things that you look back, and you're like 'Well how the hell did that happen!?'
Do you split the scripts up pretty evenly in terms of episode by episode, or do you find that one of you prefers to write the comedy elements, and one of you prefers the supernatural elements? How do you go about tackling the writing? T.W: Well, number one we don't talk.
Sure. Why would you talk? You need to be typing! T.W: If AJ has an idea we get it out in a quick game of charades.
A.J.B: Between Patrick [Doody], Chris [Valenziano], Travis, and I, we kind of sit in a room to break the stories, and then it's kind of a niche writing experience anyway. I think he took five episodes, and I took five episodes. And then on his first pass, character dynamic between the Ghostfacers guys took a little longer than what it was supposed to be, but over the course of the years, being with these characters for such a long time and seeing reruns of the show and putting them up on the internet, we really tried to understand the ins and outs of each character and how they affect each other. It was a pretty enjoyable experience; I had a blast, and even when we got into it, and the first girl came in to audition for [this new role of] Amber, Travis and I just looked at each other and were like 'Holy sh*t, someone just said our words!'
This Amber you mention, is she a candidate to replace Corbett? A.J.B: Corbett is irreplaceable! He is dearly missed, and I don't think anybody can fill [his] shoes...We're hoping he makes a return!
What is the major difference you guys have found to shooting a web series versus television? T.W: I think for me the major difference is...when you're doing a TV show, you know, they're a major production, and they have a much larger crew than we had for the web series. So when we were working on the web series, there were a couple of restrictions placed on us creatively, but there were also some areas that opened up creatively, as well.
A.J.B: The beauty about this show is that we don't need a big crew for it [being a web series]. When we shot Supernatural, the crew guys loved when we were on the show because they were just chilling. You light the set for three hundred and sixty degrees; there's no crew on the set when cameras roll because everywhere is working...I think during that "Hell House" episode really gave us an idea of how it would be and how it would sort of flow out; it's when we really first saw what the show was and how it could work so well in this type of environment.
[The web series] was almost like doing an independent film. You have to wear so many different hats, and the experience was different for us, as well, because we were [juggling] writing, directing, and acting. And for both Travis and I, we got to kind of look out for each other. If I was doing something on the set acting-wise, Travis would be behind the camera giving direction, and that's kind of a cool thing for an actor because it's rare that one gives another direction. But it was a very free, open, creative space, which is why I think it was such a fun job and space to work.
So your first season is made up of ten episodes that are three minutes each, but have you already given thought to where you want it to go if Warner Brothers says "let's keep it going?" A.J.B: Well, we kind of have a general idea of where we want to take the show...if anything, it's just the characters evolving. They'll always be themselves in that they'll make mistakes, and their vulnerabilities, and their demeanor, and everything that will go towards making them become better paranormal investigators...It's pretty open where the show could actually go.
I know you guys don't have a launch date for the series yet, but I hope you'll keep me posted. I've already gotten a few comments asking if it will air prior to your appearance Creation Entertainment's fan convention in March. A.J.B: The last convention which we did-- it was kind of mind-blowing actually-- the Ghostfacers had their own. It wasn't a Supernatural convention; it was just for the Ghostfacers, and we were all flown out to London, which was absolutely insane!
Oh wow, I wish I had known about that while it was happening! T.W: Yeah, we were out there, and AJ brought some cameras from his production company, and we shot some stuff. We had, I think it was about seven minutes, that we wrote and submitted to Kripke, and we shot it. The fans seemed to really enjoy it; it was a really cool experience. I think the web series might be out before the [March] convention, but hopefully we'll have something to show off.
Yeah, I've gotten emails from some fans who are already super psyched about it and want to bring props to take pictures with you guys and stuff. It seems like it will be a very, very interesting weekend. A.J.B: The one thing that we found with our characters is that they're so approachable at the cons and stuff because our characters are them in a sense, and there's nothing intimidating about us. [Laughs] And what we found when we were shooting at the con was that they were the best extras we ever had! We explained a few things about what was going on and how we would shoot it, and they just went full-on. It was a really special experience to see their love and intensity for [the characters].
I think it also goes back to Kripke's initial "tell a friend to tell a friend" campaign when Supernatural first premiered. The fans of the show, and therefore of you guys, are just used to that whole hit-the-ground-running on the message boards and get others excited about it. A.J.B: We've always believed in the project, but [the fans] have really helped to show the studio that there's already this kind of excitement about it. They're literally the best fans ever! They're so committed and, like, really good people that are really supportive. Both Travis and I are always saying, the more you guys talk about this stuff, the more you guys blog about it, the more we get to do to show you we're listening.
Awesome. Well, I, for one, am very excited about meeting you guys in March! Do you have plans to go back to Supernatural and do pieces in any upcoming episodes, especially now that we know the show will return for a sixth season? A.J.B: We keep hearing that Kripke is wanting us to come back, so it's just when we get the call, but we would be there with bells on!

'Supernatural': Ghostfacers balance comedy with 'pathos'
If you remember the Ghostfacer team from their three "Supernatural" episodes, you're probably expecting their new web series, which premieres today (April 15) to be a bucket of laughs.
Zap2it was on the scene when the cast and crew of "Supernatural" at the "Ghostfacers" premiere in Hollywood on April 14. We've seen the whole series, and we can say that while you'll definitely laugh, you might be surprised by the more emotional moments from the series. As Travis Wester explained to us, the story has plenty of "pathos" -- his buzzword of the night.
He's the expert. After all, he and A.J. Buckley are not only the stars of the series -- along with "Life Unexpected's" Austin Basis and Brittany Ishibashi -- but also writers and directors. It made sense for them to be on the writing staff, because the original "Supernatural" episodes were largely improvised. They were so funny that they even had "Supernatural" star Jared Padalecki laughing so hard he had to take a break from filming.
"We called him 'Chisel Chest,' and he couldn't keep it together. He just went outside and lay down on the ground and kept on laughing," Wester says.
"We just waited for him to finish," Buckley adds. "For a long time."
In the first installment, which is available now on CWTV.com, the Ghostfacers hire a new intern to accompany them while they search out the ghost of Janet Myers, a starlet murdered in an old Hollywood theater, played by "Nip/Tuck" vixen Kelly Carlson. With the help of the same special effects team that works on "Supernatural," the series is not only hilarious and chock-full of pathos, but also genuinely creepy.
Wester and Buckley sat down with Zap2it to tell us about how the spin-off came to fruition. Don't miss the video below, where they describe their initial meeting with "Supernatural" executive producer Eric Kripke. Warning: the video contains some coarse language and is not appropriate for all ages.

'Supernatural's' Ghostfacers scare up their own Web series

April 15, 2010 'Supernatural's' Ghostfacers scare up their own Web series Share | Some heavy things happen on "Supernatural," which is why the CW show about demons, angels and ghouls has always found ways to lighten the vibe.
When the Ghostfacers, a team of amateur spook-hunters, arrived on the show in Season 1, they were an amusing counterpoint to the brave and savvy Winchester brothers (who frankly found the Ghostfacers annoying). The main Ghostfacers, Ed (A.J. Buckley), Harry (Travis Wester), may have had a couple of specter-savvy Web sites, Hellhound's Lair and Ghostfacers.com, but hunting ghosts for real turned out to be tougher than they expected. But they kept at it, not least because it got them away from their minimum-wage jobs.
"Ed's got the vision, he's the guy that lays out the big picture," Wester said of the characters in a recent phone interview with Buckley. "Harry's the guy who steps in and makes sure it comes to fruition."
"I'm lost without Harry," Buckley noted. "When these two found each other at computer camp, the angels sang."
The Facers, as their fans call them, were so popular that the writers kept finding ways to bring them back on the CW show, and the team even inspired its own Ghostfacers fan convention in 2009. And now the network has given Ed, Harry, Maggie (Brittany Ishibashi) and Spruce (Austin Basis) their own Web series.
In conjunction with "Supernatural's" 100th episode, which airs Thursday, the first two installments of a new "Ghostfacers" Web series debut Thursday at CWTV.com (two more installments arrive each week for the next four weeks, and the series migrates to TheWB.com June 7). All told, the 10-episode Web series, which has the plucky, bumbling team investigating the murder of an actress, runs just under 35 minutes, according to Buckley and Westmore.
The duo, who are close friends in real life, helped create and write the Web series, along with Patrick J. Doody and Chris Valenziano. And despite the fact that the Web series paid "no money," in Buckley's words, they were able to get Kelly Carlson ("Nip/Tuck") to play an unfortunate actress named Janet, whose specter haunts an old movie theater that the Facers investigate.
Buckley and Carlson share a manager and within half hour of the actress receiving the script, they found out Carlson wanted to participate.
"Her first day, it was raining, she was in heavy makeup and she had to scream for hours. It was a 15-hour day," Buckley said. "But she was so fun and professional."
Despite the fact that they tried to film a TV pilot (an adventure depicted in the entertaining 2008 "Supernatural" episode "Ghostfacers"), nobody, least of all the Winchesters, are ready to call the Facers professionals. After all, in the first Webisode, Ed and Harry hire an intern, Ambyr (Mircea Monroe), whose main "qualification" is being attractive.
"She's the hottest girl [the Ghostfacers] have ever encountered who has actually acknowledged them," Buckley joked.
Not everything is fun and games for the Facers, however, and that's what has made these hapless but well-intentioned characters so appealing. They wouldn't have had staying power if they were just punchlines, and Wester and Buckley noted that midway through the Webisode series, things get darker for the team.
"We use the comedy to bring you in and make you feel safe, and then in episodes six through nine, the stakes are really high. The characters go through some growth and a lot of drama and there are some really good scares," Buckley said.
But there's also some romance -- maybe. The actors said that the sort-of-maybe-budding relationship between Harry and Ed's sister, Maggie, is addressed in the Web series.
"There's an attraction there that cannot be denied," even though Ed strongly disapproves, Wester said.
"Sleepovers have been banned at the house," Buckley joked.
The idea for the Web series began after Wester and Buckley worked on that Season 3 "Supernatural" episode, "Ghostfacers." "It was so much fun, we just didn't want it to stop. We wanted to keep doing it," Buckley said.
"We just wanted to do some Youtube videos -- we hopped on the phone with ['Ghostfacers'] director Phil Sgriccia and were were like, 'Is there any way we can keep these characters going without getting in hot water?'" he added.
When they heard in 2008 that "Supernatural" creator Eric Kripke wanted to talk to them to discuss a possible Web venture, they thought it would be a casual meeting. "I was in shorts and flip-flops," Buckley recalled.
"When we got to the meeting, we both thought we were in the wrong room," Wester said. More than a dozen studio and network executives were in conference room with Kripke, all of whom wanted to talk about a possible Facers online series.
"There was a lot of inner craziness but we tried to contain it" when they learned of the depth of interest in the project, Buckley said. "Once we got out of the room, we were running up and down the hall screaming."
The economic slowdown meant that the Web series didn't happen right away. But last year, once they got the greenlight to shoot the Web series, they dove into the project. And though it was tough to work with the unique Webisode format, where each 3- to 4-minute segment has to work individually and also as part of a larger whole, they said they learned to appreciate the brevity of each section.
"We couldn't get too indulgent, we couldn't delve into long conversations," Wester said. "That helps not only with the storytelling but with the comedy. I've noticed with some new media, drama doesn't work as well. With drama, it takes time to establish an emotional connection with the characters. With comedy, you can jump right in."
If there's a positive response to this Web series, they very much hope to do more, both said. "We just love doing it, we hope we never have to stop," Buckley said. Future Web series may touch on some of "Supernatural's" mythology, and the duo said Misha Collins (Castiel) has said he'd like to be part of the Ghostfacers experience, if possible.
Once we were done talking about the Web series, I had to ask Wester and Buckley the tough question. Why have they been sitting out the Apocalypse? Sure, the Winchesters and the Facers have had their run-ins over the years, but this is Satan we're talking about. Aren't the Ghostfacers going to give the Winchesters a hand this season?
Apparently not. At least they were apologetic about it.
"We would be there in a heartbeat but the Facers' van is busted. It's on the side of the road. We just didn't have the money to fix it," Buckley said.
"Someone forgot to pay the Triple A bill," Wester said. "I'm not naming names…"
A few notes: There are a couple of video interviews with Wester and Buckley about the 'Facers Web series in the videoplayer on the right side of this page (and a short clip from the series as well). And don't forget to come back here Thursday night for a review of the 100th episode of "Supernatural." And don't forget all my previous "Supernatural" stories and interviews.
