What surprised you the most about directing?
Ian Somerhalder: The one thing I loved was the creative process of [beginning with] a blank canvas, which is a stage or set, and working with the incredible group of people. Michael Allowitz, who was one of our first assistant directors for the first four years, came on as a co-producer and helped me navigate the waters of this episode. It was a huge thing to have someone I'm so close to and who is such a great director on our show to be there with me and spend every day with us. You have your [assistant directors] and your director of photography and without those people it doesn't work. They guided me and I can only take credit for very little to be honest.

Was there one scene in the episode you're especially excited for viewers to see?
Somerhalder: We have a huge party in this episode, which was a lot of fun to shoot. Bonnie and Damon have a really great scene in this episode where Bonnie is just so fed up. She always gets hurt and is always the fall girl, and it's always so intense for her. She tries her hardest to help people and it always backfires on her. This experience in the prison world made her a woman, and she's no longer going to deal with this bulls---

They had the best reunion scene though!
Somerhalder: They really are happy to see each other. It's kind of cute to see the two of them together.

How is Damon handling the information about his mom? Is he in denial or is he searching for answers?
Somerhalder: I think that's the question. The two most important women in his life, Katherine and his mother, abandoned him and didn't love him. That's a gnarly thing. So, he's going to spend some time trying to find out what really happened. It's a brutal thing for him to go through and he's going to have to figure it out.

Things are finally good between Damon and Elena. Will that last?
Somerhalder: I don't think that's absolutely going to happen, but I think they're trying. The situation is very intense and it's hard. But you definitely see [him putting in effort] and you don't always see that side of him. So, that's cool.

Until this season of The Vampire Diaries, we all thought Lily Salvatore had died in the 1800s. And in a way, she did. But what Damon–and we—recently learned is that Lily only died to come back to life … as a vampire.

More specifically, she became a ripper, eventually killing so many people that the Gemini coven stepped in and created a prison world to keep Lily detained in 1903 forever, unable to harm anyone. And when Bonnie found her way into Lily’s prison world two episodes back, Damon realized his life was about to change.

In tonight’s episode, Mama Salvatore is making her big return. Because, as actress Annie Wersching, who plays Lily, revealed, Damon plans to use her to get Stefan to flip his humanity back on. “Damon’s whole reason to even go [to the prison world] to try to find Mama S is his thinking that maybe she can help snap Stefan back,” Wersching said, and added, “So that’s his plan, but as is the world of Vampire Diaries, plans don’t exactly always go as one would hope.”

Much like plans don’t always go as one would hope, neither do reunions. According to Wersching, fans shouldn’t expect a loving mother-son reunion for Lily and Damon. “It’s not like Damon is super sweet and warm and fuzzy normally, but then add in that he’s seeing his mother for the first time in X amount of years and he’s just learned this information about her, [so] he definitely has some resentment in their first little conversation,” Wersching said. “He’s trying to give her a little bit of attitude and a little bit of Damon sarcasm, [and] she’s trying to keep her prim and proper self together but she’s also a little bit like, ‘Honey, mama knows best,’” Wersching added with a laugh.

Adding that both boys got something from their mother—and in Stefan’s case, he probably wishes he hadn’t—Wersching talked about Lily’s two sides. “There’s nothing cookie cutter about her whatsoever,” she said. “She is this maternal woman from the 1800s, wearing corsets and all that. But at the same time, she obviously is a ripper or has been a ripper, and so she has a fierceness about her, yet also a quiet calm, which I think is a fun thing to play against each other.”

And yes, Wersching will get to play those two sides against each other in various time periods. Wersching teased that it won’t be long until we see Lily out of the prison world and “trying to make sense of computers and cell phones and pants for women in present day Mystic Falls.” But she also talked about another time in which we’ll get to see Lily: flashbacks.

“You do see some Lily flashbacks, which are really interesting and exciting,” she said. “They aren’t exactly [about her pre-ripper days], but you learn a little bit about that time just from the way she talks about it. There’s quite a bit of conversation between her and the boys just about that time and about when she got sick and exactly what they thought versus what her reality was. Although it appears to them that she abandoned them and faked her death, there are always two sides to a story.”

And Lily’s story comes with a shocking reveal. “There’s something that she reveals to Damon and Elena in this episode when they’re getting ready to leave this prison world that is very shocking to them and they don’t quite know what to do with it. Once she gets to present day Mystic Falls, there still is this thing that she reveals in the prison world that she needs to fix,” Wersching said, adding that fixing this “thing” will be Lily’s number one priority. “She really needs something from a lot of people in Mystic Falls in order to help her with this thing.”

In other words, viewers will get to see Lily interact with some of Mystic Falls’ other citizens, though most of her time will be spent with her boys. And considering that she’s a recurring character, Wersching added that Lily has more than one big episode coming up.

However, whether she’ll spend those hours bonding with her kids or ripping people’s throats out is yet to be determined. “She has an interesting balance to her between the ripper side of her and also trying to contain the ripper side,” Wersching said. Like mother, like son, right Stefan?

Damon finally comes face-to-face with Mama Salvatore on Thursday’s Vampire Diaries (The CW, 8/7c), but as newcomer Annie Wersching explains, this ain’t no Oprah Winfrey Show family reunion.

“She’s been trapped in this 1903 prison world for a very long time, so initially, there’s a little bit of shock,” Wersching tells TVLine. “And Damon has a lot of questions, which he asks not-so-nicely; he’s bringing a lot of resentment and sarcasm to the party to mask his pain … so you can tell right away that they’re mother and son.”

Below, Wersching takes us into the mind of Mama Salvatore — she even reals her ‘ship of choice — and discusses how Lily will shake things up in present-day Mystic Falls, including how her arrival might be the key to Stefan’s salvation.

TVLINE | You’re coming into a show in its sixth season with more than 120 episodes under its belt. Were you able to catch up before you started filming?
When I was first up for the role, I was blind, but when I got it, I started doing my homework a little bit. I watched four episodes before I actually started shooting, but now I’ve seen the first three seasons. I’ve been a good little binge-watcher; I’m also holed up in a hotel room in Atlanta, which is kind of a prime binge-watching scenario.

TVLINE | You’ve mostly played humans throughout your career. What was your approach to playing a vampire?
My approach, besides taking goofy pictures when I was getting my vampire teeth mold done, is exactly the same as it would be for any other character. One of my goals is to make sure that, even though we’re in this heightened world, I still make Lily as grounded and real as possible. On top of that, she just happens to be a vampire.

TVLINE | And not just a vampire, but a ripper. Will we see a change in Lily’s demure demeanor?
Yeah, and I think you can tell that even though she’s this prim-and-proper 19th century woman with her hat and her corset, there’s some stuff brimming under the surface. In these first encounters with Damon [tonight], he gives her a little attitude and she tries to stay nice and calm, but you can tell it might not take much for her to snap.

TVLINE | Elena, the only other woman Damon cares about, also meets Lily this week. What’s the vibe between them?
Yes, Lily is a potential mother-in-law, and she wants to meet her son’s girlfriend, but there’s so much else going on that they have to get through first — like, “So, you’re a vampire. And you’re alive!” There’s a lot to deal with before Lily and Elena go out shopping. [Laughs] Once Lily gets to come to present-day Mystic Falls, there are interactions between her and Elena that aren’t exactly as cookie-cutter as you’d expect [from a woman and her son’s girlfriend.]

TVLINE | Lily being from the 1800s, I imagine coming to the present day will freak her out a bit. Like, what are these cell phones?
Oh, absolutely! I think in [tonight’s] episode, she sees a computer for the first time and is just kind of like, “OK…” But I will say, she’s a Salvatore, so she does acclimate — in some regards — pretty quickly, like, “Well, look what I just Googled!” There’s a lot of social stuff in the modern world that takes her a little longer to acclimate to, like how women act and how they’re able to act.

TVLINE | So much of the focus right now is on Damon and Lily, but Stefan is also her son. What’s that dynamic, and when will we see them interact?
I actually think I shot for quite a while before I even met Paul [Wesley], so most of her initial stuff is with Damon. It’s actually Damon’s plan to have mama be the thing to help Stefan out of his humanity-off phase. That doesn’t necessarily mean things go according to plan, but that’s the idea. … She tries her best to be what her sons want her to be, but she’s a very different woman now.

TVLINE | Since you went back and watched the earlier seasons, do you have a favorite couple on the show?
I’m assuming part of my bias is that I’m a mother, but I tend to first go to the Defan ship, the boys together as brothers. But as Lily, I feel like the writers and producers are perfectly manipulating me. I feel like I’ll be going in one direction, like, “Oh, Damon and Elena…” and then I’ll be like, “Oh, Stefan…”

During the past six seasons of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES very little was ever known about the mother of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan Salvatore (Paul Welsey). It was said that she had died of consumption back in 1858. What Damon just found out was his mother Lily Salvatore (Annie Wersching) had faked her death after becoming a vampire; and worse yet, she was a ripper. A ripper is a vampire who is so consumed by their blood-lust that they will literally rip the heads off their prey and do not care how many people they kill in their attempt to assuage their craving for fresh, human blood.

After years of terrorizing habitants of Europe and the U.S., the Gemini Coven finally succeeded in capturing Lily and stowing her away in a special prison world in 1903, where she has been left alone ever since. That is until Bonnie (Kat Graham) stumbled across Lily when Bonnie’s prison world began to collapse. After seeing his mother is alive and well, albeit trapped in another dimension, Damon is bound and determined to get his mother out of the prison world — even if it means teaming up with his former enemy Kai (Chris Wood) to do it.

In an exclusive interview, special guest-star Annie Wersching talked about her role as Lily Salvatore and teased what lies ahead once Lily is rescued.

What initially drew you to the role of Lily Salvatore?
ANNIE: I got a description from the producers about the role of Lily and I was just super intrigued by all the different facets. I think she is really multilayered. There’s a lot going on with Lily. So I was pretty excited to play someone that is intense and fierce as a ripper vampire, yet at the same time, is sort of a prim and proper woman of the past. I just feel that there is a real interesting dichotomy with this role. Once I read the full description and their plans for her, I was like, “Sign me up!”

It seems like you are drawn to role where you get to take a walk on the dark side. Is that something you look for?
ANNIE: [Laughs] No, not necessarily. It’s always fun to play someone who has a lot of stuff going on. You may think someone is a certain way and to see them crossover a different way or fall off the beaten path, that can obviously make things a bit more exciting opposed to just where you think your character is going. But it is not necessarily something I look for. I look for interesting roles where there is interesting stuff going on underneath.

If you could pick out one quality, what quality do you most admire about Lily?
ANNIE: I’d probably say: loyalty. She is fiercely, fiercely loyal to those that she deems worthy.

What draws her back to Mystic Falls?
ANNIE: Pretty quickly you learn that Damon has this plan that maybe if he brings Mama back to Mystic Falls, she might be able to help with Stefan’s humanity issue. That is what initially brings her back to present day Mystic Falls. But, of course, as the show goes on, nothing goes exactly as planned. A lot of stuff happens to her besides trying to help with Stefan.

How does Lily feel about her sons, Damon and Stefan?
ANNIE: That’s a huge part of her — the relationship between her and these boys — they have in their head this sort of vision and that’s been crushed, their idea of what happened to her. They hold a lot of anger and resentment about what they think has been lies and, of course, there are two sides to every story. So she wants very much so to try to be the mother that they long for and they are hoping for to be returned to them. But she has lived through a lot of awful stuff since she “died.” She is not quite able to give them exactly what they are looking for, but she is trying.

Is Lily proud of the fact that both her sons are vampires and that one of them is a ripper like her?
ANNIE: I guess so. Obviously, there are some similarities between her and both of them in different ways. She’s happy they have turned into seemingly good men.

But she clearly doesn’t want Stefan to be a ripper if she is going to help him.
ANNIE: Right. She is this prim and proper woman of the past and I don’t think ripper-ism is anything she wanted herself and is certainly isn’t something she wanted for her son. That being said, she also understands what it is like, and when you are in the middle of it, you don’t have much control over it. So she has a little bit of empathy towards what that is like.

Since Lily is known to be a ripper, are we going to have to worry that she has a strong blood-lust and that she may try to try kill everyone in sight?
ANNIE: [Laughs] In this episode, as they are getting ready to leave the prison world, she actually reveals something to Damon and Elena [Nina Dobrev], a surprise — a secret she has in her prison world — that is shocking to them. That then becomes an issue for her and something that she to — well, when she doesn’t get what she wants, it is hard for her to keep that blood-lust of ripper-ism at bay. It is very hard and we will have to see how she does.

If you were to offer some advice to Lily, what would you tell her?
ANNIE: I would probably tell her that although it is hard to realize it and feel it right now that her sons do in fact care for her and have her and their best interests at heart. That she should try to trust them.

How is Lily going to feel about Caroline (Candice Accola)?
ANNIE: There’s a lot of different facets on the different sides of Lily and different things that she has to deal with and learn about. I wouldn’t say that Caroline is one of her top priorities once she gets back. There is some other stuff going on for her that she needs to have people help her with — and, obviously, the relationships with her sons are the first thing that they are trying to fix and figure out exactly what their dynamic is.

Is Lily going to have an opinion about Elena? After all, Elena has dated both her sons. Is she going to take to Elena?
ANNIE: [Laughs] In the prison world, when she seems Damon again for the first time, she meets Elena as well. So right off the bat, she knows Elena. But there are so many other issues going on, I wouldn’t say that she jumps right away into an “approving mother” role towards her son’s girlfriend Elena or Caroline. Lily has a lot of other stuff to figure out before she can be shopping with her potential daughter-in-laws or whatever.

So she’s not planning any weddings any time soon then.
ANNIE: [Laughs] Right.

For you, what has been the funnest part working on the show?
ANNIE: Oh my gosh! There has been so much fun stuff. I’m a little bit of a goofball. I take all sorts of silly behind the scenes pictures. Either time I get to see a cool vampire thing or do a cool vampire thing, I’m always like, “This is so fun!” Now that the audience has learned some stuff, I finally get to post some of my pictures. I can post like when they did the mold of my teeth to make the vampire teeth. I was just so excited. So that part has been really fun. And it’s also just fun to come onto a show that is 6 years in and they are going strong. They are such a family. Obviously, since they are all living in Atlanta together, that helps with that. Ian and Paul are just the kindest, sweetest, most generous, human people. So that’s nice. You don’t always get that when you come into a show. So it’s been fun to join something that feels sort of warm-and-fuzzy.

Will we see Lily interact with Michael Malarky’s character Enzo?
ANNIE: It’s kind of funny to me to see Lily interact with anybody in Mystic Falls. She’s definitely gotten to meet a few people. But she is learning a lot about the world and how the world works now. It’s been fun for her to interact with any of the people who are not people from the past.

She sounds like a kid in a candy store!
ANNIE: [Laughs] She is, a bit.

After all, much like Stefan, Lily is a creature of extreme guilt. “She has a lot of torment inside of her,” Annie Wersching says. “And then adding this guilt that she feels for what the boys think of her and think that she did to them, [it] really messes with her.” According to Wersching, Mama Salvatore will have a bit of trouble adjusting to her present-day life, and the same goes for her relationship with her sons. However, she does note, “They do eventually become their own version of a mother-son relationship.”

Below, O’Keefe reveals what she can about Jo and Alaric’s impending nuptials — I’m thinking the season’s penultimate episode, reportedly titled “I’ll Wed You in the Golden,” sounds like a reasonable wedding date — and reflects on how that major life event might inspire a change in an already-uncertain Elena.

TVLINE | Guest stars on this show, especially those that date Alaric, tend to have a short shelf life. How did you feel when the producers told you what they had in store for Jo?
Every time I get a new script, I still skim it for my parts just to make sure I’m still alive. [Laughs] I keep waiting for that moment. So it did make me a little more hopeful when they told me what they had planned for her.

TVLINE | Ian Somerhalder recently told us he doubted Jo would let Alaric make Damon his best man. Do you agree?
You know what? I think Jo, at this point, would be OK with anything. She’s been through hell and back this year, so Alaric can have any best man he wants.

TVLINE | So Jo is cool with Damon now? I know they’ve had their ups and downs — mostly downs.
I think she is, yes. She’s still a little wary around everyone, which I think is smart, but I think they’ve finally gotten their s—t together. [Laughs]

TVLINE | I imagine Jo has to make Elena her maid of honor, right?
Don’t you think? I mean, I was thinking about that, myself, because I haven’t gotten the wedding script yet.

TVLINE | Speaking of Elena, she finds out Jo is pregnant soon, and it causes her to reflect on her own future. What can you say about that?
I think Jo is going to be how she’s always been with Elena, which is very supportive. She’ll want her to think it through and decide what’s important to her, and make sure she makes any decisions based on that. Jo has been, and will always be, a voice of reason for Elena, and whatever choices she makes, Jo will support them. I think Jo really does adore Elena, and she just wants to be a support system for her.

TVLINE | Do you think Elena should take the cure now that it’s back in play?
That’s an excellent question, one I haven’t even thought about. I wonder what’s going to be more important to her; I wonder if her life as it is now is what she ultimately wants, or if she wants the kind of life she previously had with those other options. It’s tricky.

TVLINE | Back to Jo and Alaric, how do you think they’ll be as parents?
I think they’re going to be fantastic, very doting. It’s going to be such a new experience for both of them, one Alaric never thought he’d have, and one Jo just never factored in. It came as a big surprise to her, but also a welcome one, so it’ll be interesting. How do you have a baby when you’re surrounded by vampires?

TVLINE | At least you’ll have a stable of really powerful babysitters.
Yes! Babysitters who don’t need sleep, so that’s good. [Laughs] Night shift babysitters!

TVLINE | This might be a silly question, but should we expect to see Kai at the wedding?
Jo is still really fearful of her brother, and rightly so. I mean, he slaughtered her entire family when they were kids, and I’m not sure how much we can trust his change, even with Luke’s influence over him.
