Synopsis officiel de l'épisode 3.01
Citation :

The Vampire Diaries - Paul Wesley Talks Stefan In Season 3
Spoiler:
The good news: We’ll see a different side of the actor this season as Stefan hits the ripper road with Klaus (Joseph Morgan). ”In the first couple of episodes, there’s still a lot of one-foot-in, one-foot-out of this situation he’s in,” Wesley tells EW. “Something’s gonna happen that drastically changes that, and then at that point, he commits and doesn’t look back. Then he can really enjoy it. The truth is, I can be a dark guy like any other, but I love humor, and I love goofing off, and I love being silly, and playing a character that’s constantly burdened for years, it can be a little depressing after a while. To play a character who has absolutely no conscience, that literally felt like taking a load off my shoulders.”
How will we get our Stefan back? That’s a good question. “There’s gonna be a lot of killing. As far as Stefan is concerned, he can never go back to his old life. Imagine Stefan sitting in high school. Apart from the fact that I just look weird sitting in high school,” he laughs, “he’s murdered all these people. What do you think, we’re just gonna go hang out now? As far as he’s concerned, he’s moved on. He’s past it all.”

Producer Kevin Williamson Talks THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and THE SECRET CIRCLE
Spoiler:
The CW supernatural drama The Vampire Diaries is one of those rare shows that just keeps getting stronger in its storytelling, making its Season 3 return on September 15th highly anticipated for its devoted fan base. After Klaus (Joseph Morgan) proved himself to be the most powerful vampire in existence at the end of Season 2, wreaking havoc on Mystic Falls, this season will explore Klaus’ motives for wanting Stefan (Paul Wesley) on his side, the growing bond between Stefan’s love Elena (Nina Dobrev) and his brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder), and Jeremy’s (Steven R. McQueen) new ability to see the ghosts of his past loves. And, making things even better, the popular series will now be teamed up with The Secret Circle, which is also adapted from books by L.J. Smith and executive produced by Kevin Williamson.
During a recent interview, in which he discussed both series and the differences between their mythologies, Williamson talked about how the first half of the season of The Vampire Diaries will explore the Original Family, that viewers will learn why Jeremy is seeing ghosts, that Bonnie (Katerina Graham) will play a pivotal role in the story, and how, if you focus on telling an emotional story, the twists and turns present themselves. He also talked about how The Secret Circle will be more of a multi-generational story, with its own intriguing love triangle and balance of power. Check out what he had to say after the jump:
Question: What will be going on with the supernatural mythology of The Vampire Diaries in Season 3?
KEVIN WILLIAMSON: In the first half of the season, I think we’re going to really enjoy Klaus (Joseph Morgan), and him being not only an Original, but the bastard child of the Original Family. Now, he’s a hybrid and he’s lifted the curse. It will be watching what he does. He has a whole plan behind it all, and Stefan (Paul Wesley) is part of that plan. He sets his plan in motion in the very first episode, and we play that out for a while.
Will viewers get to see much of Klaus’ life and family?
WILLIAMSON: That’s the idea. We have so much story to tell, with regard to what’s happening in Mystic Falls and the little road journey that Klaus and Stefan are on, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) attempt to save him, and what Klaus is actually up to, that I’m not exactly sure how much of the original family we’ll get to, but you are going to meet a few of the original families. Hopefully, Elijah (Daniel Gillies) will return, at some point. We have no set plans yet, but we love him so much that we definitely want him back. There are so many characters and storylines that are rich, but we’re hoping that, as the season progresses, by the end of the season, it will all come together. We have a bunch of loose threads right now. Julie [Plec] and I worked out this master plan that ties it all together, but it’s a mythology, so it’s chapter by chapter by chapter. By the end of the season, it will all make sense.
You have so many twists and turns and big reveals, in almost every episode. As the seasons progress, does that get more and more difficult to do?
WILLIAMSON: It does, if you sit around and try to think of twists and turns. I won’t let the writers do that. What we really need to do is focus on the character, the character’s behavior, the choices they make, their desire, their want and what they’re after, and tell a compelling emotional story. If you tell an emotional story, then the twists and turns just reveal themselves. They really do. Once you have the emotional journey, you can go back and re-engineer how you tell it to create the twists. I know where I’m going to end up, so I’ll just throw in the other element that makes it all amiss. It’s the fun of the show. It’s fun for me because I feel like reading all those paperback mystery novels when I was a kid has finally paid off.
Are there any additional aspects of the novel that you’re going to introduce, or are you not even looking to the original source material anymore?
WILLIAMSON: It’s hard now because we’ve departed so much, but whenever we have the opportunity, we try to circle back or bring it in.
With Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) seeing the ghosts of his dead girlfriends, will that affect his mental state?
WILLIAMSON: The thing with Jeremy is that, when we started the show, he was dealing with the death of his parents and he was on the wrong track. It will be interesting to see how he responds to seeing dead people and what that means. The first six episodes really do dive into trying to understand what’s going on with him. He died for an hour, and something happened in that hour that has allowed him to see these dead people. And, what are they, actually? Are they ghosts? Ghosts haunt you either for revenge, or because they love you or are trying to come to peace with you, or they’re trying to warn you or tell you something. He’s got to figure out exactly what is going on and what they’re going to try to tell him.
With these ghosts, will you deal with whether vampires have a soul?
WILLIAMSON: Yeah, we do touch on that, actually. Within our mythology, what else is out there? In a regular human life, we all have some sort of faith, where we believe in some other world and a heaven, but where do vampires go? We don’t know. It’s that question. We’re going to touch on that, without being religious.
Is Matt (Zach Roerig) going to stay the human character, in the middle of all these supernatural creatures?
WILLIAMSON: We have all these characters who have a supernatural connection, whether they’re human or not, like Jeremy who has a ring, and then you have Matt, who is our last-standing human, and now he’s in the know, as a result of last year. I think it’s going to be interesting to watch him play that out with Caroline (Candice Accola), his best friend Tyler (Michael Trevino) and his ex-girlfriend Elena. It’s going to be a lot. It will be interesting. But, we want to keep him human. We like that idea.
With her power growing, how pivotal is Bonnie’s role going to be this season?
WILLIAMSON: Bonnie is very pivotal. As we left Season 2, the man she loves was seeing dead people. He’s seeing the only two other women that he’s loved in his life, and that story plays out, right from the get-go. Bonnie is right in the center of it because, in our mythology lore of our original family and Klaus, a witch is at the root of all of that, and Bonnie is our own resident witch.
What will viewers see with Tyler (Michael Trevino) and the werewolf mythology?
WILLIAMSON: The triangle between Tyler, Caroline (Candice Accola) and Matt, who is our only resident human, now in the know, is going to continue to play out, so that’s going to get fun. “My best friend a werewolf. The girl that I love is a vampire. Where do I fit in all of this?” That triangle is going to completely be side by side with the Stefan, Elena and Damon of it all.
Relationship wise, what can you say about Season 3?
WILLIAMSON: The fun is the obvious, which is Damon and Elena’s relationship, and how it progresses in the pursuit for Stefan and trying to save him, if he can even be saved. Damon is being thrust into this role of hero now. We saw it happening in the second season, and it’s a role he’s not good at or comfortable with. A man can only save so many people before he’s gonna flip. My favorite part of all this is writing Damon and watching him be this reluctant hero who is one step forward, three steps back. “I save you, but then I kill three people.” It’s going to be that kind of conflict, constantly, for him.
Now, he’s friends with Elena, and Elena is there saying, “It’s not okay to kill people. You can’t do it anymore, or I’m done.” But, it’s his nature. It’s who he is. So, he still battles a lot of that, and also his romantic feelings for her. And, she’s going to be faced with what Katherine said at the end of the show, which is that it’s okay to love both of them, because it might not be. Not for her. That was Katherine’s choice, but it may not be Elena’s choice. That’s going to be the rest of our series. It’s that one line she uttered. She does love both of them, but it’s what she does about it. You can love a lot of people, but it’s the actions you take. It’s going to be her turn, which I’m so excited about.
What is it about L.J. Smith’s novels that make them easy to adapt for television?
WILLIAMSON: “Easy” is not in the universe here. It’s not easy. It’s a challenge, which is why it’s fun, but it’s actually really hard. What I love so much about L.J. Smith’s world is that she taps into the stuff that I love. She taps into my happy place, which is a lot of the growing up, coming of age, and teen angst stuff, but then she mixes it with genre, which I love, and spins it all around. One of the challenges is adapting that to a series because there is a series of books. She really delves into the history, and the past and future, and all these different areas. To serialize that into a weekly story and build the mythology, it is a challenge. With the pace and the storytelling that I like to generate, it’s often hard, but it’s also fun. I love L.J. Smith. The betrayal, the deceit, the friendship, the loyalty, the love, the murder and the mayhem is all of the stuff that is my happy place. So, I take my hat off to L.J. and thank her. She’s made it easy and hard for me, all at the same time.
Will The Secret Circle eventually be an inter-generational war?
WILLIAMSON: Yeah. There is this idea of what happened 16 years ago, that chased Cassie’s mother from this town. What was so horrific? As our new Circle tries to uncover that, for fear of their own future, a lot of those discoveries do go inter-generational. We have the Dawn and Charles Circle, but we also have Jane, who is Cassie’s grandmother, who has her own Circle. So, there is this generational aspect, if you look at the hidden mythology. It’s a world of villainy, where you may not like what they are doing or agree with the villains, but if we do our job right, you will understand them and understand why they are doing what they are doing. Hopefully, it will resonate in an emotional way, along with the thrills and fun.
What will the balance be, between the generations?
WILLIAMSON: I don’t think of The Vampire Diaries as the younger generation because the vampires are 164 years old. We have this ageless attitude with that show. I don’t think of it as a young show because we don’t stay that much in high school. What I love about The Secret Circle is that it’s multi-generational. I love the idea that it’s not just a teen show. It is very much an adult show, and the themes and ideas that are running through it, while they are young characters, is going to get very adult, very fast. It’s just going to go more that way than the high school, teen way.
Does everyone in this town know about this Circle of witches, or are there going to be people who don’t know?
WILLIAMSON: Oh, sure, absolutely. There’s this town of Chance Harbor, and there are these six families with their lineage of the Circle, but there are also other witches in town. There has to be more than just six. There are a lot of townspeople, and there are a lot of people who have no idea about witches. It’s a normal, small Midwestern American town, and they do not know anything of witchcraft, for the most part.
In the pilot, Cassie (Britt Robertson) goes from not being able to lift a drop of water to being able to stop this huge lightning storm. How do you find the limitations of their power, now that these five have found each other?
WILLIAMSON: Good question. There is that big fear. One of the things I always kid about is that, if you can do a spell, why can’t you just do another spell to better that spell, or to undo that spell. Do the spells get bigger and bigger and bigger, and then there goes your visual effects budget? How do you ground it and make it real, and still tell the emotional stories? That was our chief concern about moving forward, from Episode 1. So much magic does happen in the pilot. You’ll rightly see the answer to that question, in the second episode.
How do you intend to draw out the love triangle on this show?
WILLIAMSON: I don’t know, for a hundred episodes at least. No. I think it will take some twists and turns. We have to take that triangle and get to know them. It’s going to be interesting when we get to know them better and learn exactly what it is that’s written in the stars. There’s going to be a history to it. It’s romance. It will take a lot of twists and turns.
Will The Secret Circle be a little lighter and have a bit more humor than The Vampire Diaries?
WILLIAMSON: These are real people, living in a real world, and then suddenly, they are making this magic. I do think there certainly is a snark to that. Damon has it, front and center. The Secret Circle is very dark. Our version of witchcraft is very dark. It’s not that hard-edged, ripping hearts out and slicing people open that we do in The Vampire Diaries, but there are other ways to skin a cat. So, there will be humor, and there will be scary, evil, witchy-woo.
What are differences between the mythologies and the powers that witches have in these two universes?
WILLIAMSON: When you do the historical history lesson of it all, it dates back to a place. With The Vampire Diaries, it’s completely separate. It would be really hard to connect the witchcraft of The Secret Circle to the witchcraft of The Vampire Diaries. They are operating under different rules.

Treize jours… A lire ci-dessous.
Returning for its third season on September 15th, The Vampire Diaries is the story of two vampire brothers, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder), who are both obsessed with Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev). As Stefan sinks deeper into the dark side, Damon and Elena struggle with the guilt of their growing bond, even as they work together to bring Stefan back from the edge that Original vampire Klaus (Joseph Morgan) has brought him to.
During a recent interview, actor Ian Somerhalder talked about how his character Damon Salvatore will change this season, the push-pull between what Damon truly is and who everyone else wants him to be, the effects of the Season 2 finale kiss between Damon and Elena, Damon’s relationships with Bonnie (Katerina Graham) and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), and making sure that his character maintains his edge, even if he does end up an anti-hero. Check out what he had to say after the jump:
Question: With Stefan having departed, what role will Damon have in Season 3? How will he change?
IAN SOMERHALDER: Honestly, it’s a television show and these characters evolve. I would rather just remain the bad-ass dude that gets all the great lines and rips everybody’s heads off. That’s what I would prefer. I know it sounds a little sadistic, but it makes for a better character. But, I don’t think that’s the way life is. Kevin Williamson basically sat me down and said, “Just shut up and listen. Life is not one-dimensional. We change.” It’s that push-pull. He’s fighting against what he truly is, and that’s what makes the story dynamic. He is an anti-hero. He doesn’t know how to do all this stuff, so I think he’s going to have some trials and tribulations.
Ultimately, he’s not happy with the way things have turned out. He tried, for two seasons, to get his brother to do what he wanted him to do, which is to be what he is. He wants them to just eat and destroy everything in their paths. Now, Stefan is running around with a guy that Damon hates and tried to kill him. He’s effectively left Damon in this town with this girl who’s 150 years younger than he is, that he’s in love with, but can’t have because she doesn’t want him and it’s his brother’s girl. He’s just sitting there, thinking to himself, “This sucks!” But, I think he’s going to rise to the occasion. He’ll have the same grin on his face, if he’s ripping your head off or saving a kitten. He feels the same way about both things.
How did you interpret the kiss between Damon and Elena?
SOMERHALDER: I keep hearing about this “passionate kiss.” I don’t know if anyone saw, but he was also pale white, sweating profusely and bleeding. There wasn’t anything very passionate about it, so I don’t know how much I would read into that, although I do know that he remembers it. He makes a mention of it, jabbing at Elena, but illustrating that he definitely remembers it. It didn’t go unnoticed. She gets things from Damon that she doesn’t get from Stefan. They jab at each other and have this fun banter. He makes her smile, even though he killed her brother and basically destroyed her life, in many ways. That’s where he is. He is not happy about this situation, but he loves and has to protect this girl. He knows his brother did all this shit to save him. Stefan is now an indentured servant, for who knows how long – whether it’s a decade or a millennia.
Because of the books, there are a lot of fans that would like to see Damon and Bonnie together. What do you think about that? Would you like to see that?
SOMERHALDER: Bonnie is hot! Sleeping with a witch would probably be pretty interesting. I hear that, and I understand that. Damon and Bonnie really are, in ways, cut from very similar cloth. Damon and Bonnie have a really cool dynamic. They’re pretty funny together. I remember shooting that scene where they’re dancing together, and I remember saying, “Wow, that really works!” I know that happens in the books. It’s that thing where you hate someone and then you fall for them. But, Damon is so wrapped up in Elena. Could you imagine Jeremy coming after Damon being like, “Stay away from my girlfriend!,” and banging on his chest, and Damon sitting there going, “Really? We hooked up once kid. It was fun. Leave me alone.” But, who knows?
Damon always pushes Jeremy to man-up in situations. Will you have more scenes together this season?
SOMERHALDER: Probably, now that Damon is stuck in Mystic Falls. With Alaric (Matthew Davis), he is beholden to look after them. Damon has to take care of Jeremy’s little ass, and that is the last thing he wants to do. I think Jeremy could learn a lot from Damon that he really does not need to know. Honestly, I have no idea what’s going to happen, though.
Are you concerned with Damon maintaining his edge?
SOMERHALDER: That’s the thing, and Kevin [Williamson] and I talked about that. It’s like that alcoholic in the bar. It’s difficult. People need him to be this hero, but he ultimately is not going to know hot to do that. He’s going to slip up all the time and kill people, either accidentally or not accidentally. And, he’s going to wallow in a little bit of, “Why is this happening?” The way you keep it fresh is to weave the thread of life into this text. Ultimately, you are pulling from your past, present and future experiences. From when I wrapped in mid-April until now, I am a completely different person and so are you. We have to strive to make every day cool or great, or just get through it, however it goes.
There is the edge, in keeping it fresh and keeping things in my life that I can actually put into the text. The only way I’m going to be able to really, truly live a moment is if it actually means something to me. You can’t just show up and say the words. Don’t for a second think it’s always cotton candy. Sometimes it really hurts. A lot of stuff that Damon goes through is super-cathartic for me, as an individual, and it’s not always pretty. You’re muddying the water, all the time. You’re pulling from all these things in your life that are not necessarily good. It’s basically like getting paid for therapy. Instead of laying on someone’s couch and telling them about how you feel, you’re internally pulling all this stuff.
I work with this woman who is so profound in her work. Her name is Ivana Chubbuck. She is globally probably the most famous acting coach, walking the face of the planet, who is still working. The way she teaches, and her ability to take from your life and weave it into the tread of the text, it forms a cloak and that’s what you see. Underneath, you don’t see all the stitching and everything. What you see outside is what’s presented to you and what’s real, but it is not easy. This woman knows more about more people in Hollywood than anyone, and it’s really deep, profound, fucked up stuff. For me, that’s acting. It’s what I do, every day. It’s pretty weird.
A lire ci-dessous. ».

David Gallagher talks 'Vampire Diaries' arc (which he can thank 'Super 8' for) by Mandi Bierly
Spoiler:
On the Sept. 15 season 3 premiere of The Vampire Diaries, we’ll meet a Tennessee werewolf named Ray Sutton, played by 7th Heaven‘s David Gallagher (pictured with Joseph Morgan’s Klaus and Paul Wesley’s Stefan). “They’re actually hunting for me, so when I finally encounter them, I get swept into Klaus’ master plan that he has developed around Ray. It’s not the friendliest of encounters,” he tells EW. “I think the audience is really gonna eat it up. It really has to do with Klaus’ vision of the future.”
That casting of Gallagher is equally cool: He has a history with the show. He actually read for the pilot. “There was debate as to whether I was a Stefan or I was a Damon. I had read for both,” he says. “I think ultimately, it was sorta difficult to place me because lately in my career, I’ve been leaning toward things with a little bit darker sensibility [he'd guested as confirmed or suspected killers on Numb3rs, CSI: Miami, Saving Grace, and Without a Trace], and that clashed with the work people knew me for at the time.”
“He impressed us so much originally, and we said, ‘Gosh, he’s really a good actor, but that whole 7th Heaven thing… I wonder if he’ll ever be able to get past that,’” Vampire Diaries exec producer Julie Plec remembers. But then she saw him as scene-stealing stoner Donny in J.J. Abrams’ Super 8. “I had no idea it was him until after the movie was over and my friend said, ‘What did you think of David Gallagher? Wasn’t he great?’ And I said, ‘Omigod, he was completely unrecognizable.’ I guess he found a way to get past the 7th Heaven thing,” she laughs. “I was just so impressed by the choices he’s making as an actor and how committed he is, that when he came into read for the Ray part, there was no hesitation wanting to get him into this world and play with us. And he did a great job. He’s a really smart, committed actor and he grew up on a TV show that defined him in a certain way. He’s actually absolutely nothing like that as an actor. That’s why it’s exciting to give him an opportunity to really show off his dark and edgy chops.”
Going to the dark side was a “semi-conscious decision,” the 26-year-old Gallagher says. “I definitely came out of my college years [he graduated from USC with a Critical Studies of Film degree] hungry for work again. I had taken some time off, and I was really dying to get back to work and I really wanted a change. I’d spent a decade on 7th Heaven playing Simon, which was a great opportunity for me. It was a wonderful show and a great role and it did a lot of great things for me. But ultimately, at the end of the day, I wanted to be challenged by something new. And as I got older, I became far more interested in the darker characters. A few years back, when I was still fighting the 7th Heaven image, I was trying to say, ‘Well, I can do serial killers. I can do dark material. I can do emotionally dark material.’ Now, I’m sorta coming into this era, especially after Super 8 and a lot of my other guest appearances, where people are saying, ‘Well, David Gallagher’s very dark.’ That makes me happy. It shows that people have enjoyed my recent work and taken it seriously, and it’s changing the way that they’re looking at me.”
His look has also helped with that. When he went in to read for the top-secret Super 8, he didn’t receive the material — a dummy script with lines for a character with a different name than Donny — until he got to the audition. “You showed up to the audition, they gave you the material, you spent a few minutes with the material, and then they read you, and then they took the material back even though it was fake,” he says. “I went in there scruffy and grungy, coincidentally — it’s my hair and beard in the film – and once I realized what I was doing there, I was like, ‘Oh, this works to my advantage.’ I knew that physically I had a really cool spin for it. At one point after the audition, they called and asked for pictures, which is always a very good sign. I found a picture of myself fishing,” he laughs, “and it’s a terrible picture of me from a few years back. Me and my girlfriend were like night fishing, and I got this random picture taken of me, and my hair was shaggy, and I look incredibly stoned. So that’s the picture I sent in to them, which reinforced the look that I had and I think they got a kick out of that. And after that, I got the part. So I jokingly attribute my Super 8 casting to my fishing picture.”
Gallagher knew what a break Donny would be for him. “When we were on set, I heard a lot that Donny was everyone’s favorite character in the script, and everyone loved Donny, and Donny was the funniest part. It didn’t go in the way of making me feel better, it actually made me quite a bit more nervous because I knew that I had a character that people were bound to remember, and I really wanted to do justice to it,” he says. “My goal became, how do I portray this ’70s stoner, the comic relief, and not be goofy or the ‘stupid stoner.’ I wanted Donny to be likable, not too overly animated or too hazy. I wanted Donny to be a real guy who just really wanted to get stoned, but instead had all of this stuff happen around him.”
When Gallagher went into audition for the role of Ray for Vampire Diaries producers, it was a similar situation, with only a vague idea that the character would be a Southern supernatural. He didn’t know whether he’d have fangs or fur. ”Ultimately, I just went in and tried to bring a little bit of personality, a little bit of a smile. Bad guys have more fun. A bad guy always assumes he’s going to win, whereas the good guy has to struggle with, what if I lose?, and the audience wants to struggle with him. The charismatic bad guy, that’s the sensibility I brought into the audition, and it seemed to apply well to what Ray needed to be. Ultimately, Ray turned out to be more of a victim, which I found to be a pleasant surprise, and gave it an extra layer that I didn’t expect.”
Does his two-episode arc come to a bloody end then? “Certainly blood is involved. I think I can comfortably tell you that Ray’s run-in with Klaus involves blood,” he laughs. Plec’s tone would seem to concur: “Poor Ray. That does not end well for him. It has a lot to do with what I call Klaus and Stefan’s ‘great summer ripper road show,’ and where Stefan is in his relationship with Klaus. Ray comes into that story line and puts Stefan in a position where he has to show his loyalty to Klaus at the expense of this other person.”
Looking ahead, Gallagher says he’s open to any role. He’s still reading for a lot of killer types on cop shows and the day we chatted, he’d just auditioned for another stoner type. “I look to challenge myself with a character that’s not like myself or anything I’ve done before, but I certainly don’t reject roles based on how often I’ve done them. If I were to book another stoner-type role, then I would hope to bring something different to it. I wouldn’t want it to be just Donny with short hair,” he says. “I’d like to be that chameleon. That’s really ultimately what I want to hear from people eventually: ‘I really love when I see him in stuff, but I never know he’s gonna be here.’ I want to be that actor that surprises you when you see him in a project, and you go, ‘Yes! I love that guy. He’s in this? Awesome.’ It’s sort of a different goal than most, but I’m really happy with the way things have been progressing lately and coming together.”
